‘This is one of the best specimens discovered,’ says James Hyslop, head of Christie’s Science & Natural History department. Unearthed in 1987, less than a century after the existence of Tyrannosaurus rex had first become known, STAN — named after his discoverer Stan Sacrison — represents one of the most complete fossil skeletons of the most famous dinosaur species ever to have lived.

6–8 October 2020

Found in 1987 and one of the most complete fossils of its kind, Stan is going up for sale Oct. 6. $6,000,000+.

Christie’s Auctions | The life and times of STAN — one of the most complete T. Rex skeletons ever found

Human beings have only been aware of T. rex since the dawn of the 20th century, after remains were first documented by the legendary palaeontologist, Barnum Brown.

In 1900 and 1902, ‘Mr Bones’, as the then assistant curator of the American Museum of Natural History was known, found partial skeletons in Wyoming and on the Montana side of the Hell Creek Formation. (The same landscape of Upper Cretaceous rocks where STAN was found across the border in South Dakota.)

T. rex, soon after dubbed ‘the prizefighter of antiquity’, has been a subject of global fascination ever since — a fusion of science, history and popular culture in the public imagination.

Quickly adopted by cinema, the most fearsome of dinosaurs appeared in The Lost World (1925), fought the climactic battle with King Kong (1933) and shared a striking resemblance to Godzilla (1954). Its most spectacular screen role came in 1993 with Jurassic Park, in which it became a monster for the ages.

A male Tyrannosaurs rex. From the Hell Creek Formation, 16 meters below the K-T boundary, Maastrichtian, Late Cretaceous (circa 67 million years ago). Approx. 190 bones surviving and mounted on custom frame with additional cast elements. A separate display for the original skull and teeth. Size: 37 x 13 x 6 ft (1128 x 396 x 183 cm). Estimate: $6,000,000-8,000,000. Offered in the 20th Century Evening Sale on 6 October at Christie’s in New York

STAN will be offered on 6 October in the 20th Century Evening Sale at Christie’s in New York — ‘a once in a generation chance’, according to Hyslop. ‘There simply aren’t T. rexes like this coming to market. It’s an incredibly rare event when a great one is found.

‘It is such an iconic piece of the 20th century, and fits so well in the context we are offering it.’ Archetype, movie star, pop-culture celebrity, it is fitting that STAN will make his auction debut alongside masterpieces of modern and contemporary art.

‘T. rex is a brand name in a way that no other dinosaur is,’ says Hyslop.‘It sits very naturally against a Picasso, a Jeff Koons or an Andy Warhol.’

Born in the Badlands

STAN lived in the late Cretaceous period — the prehistoric age that ended mysteriously and abruptly some 65 million years ago with the mass extinction of the dinosaurs.

He was born, grew up and died in a humid, semi-tropical region of an island continent identified as Laramidia, an area known today as the Badlands, which spans North and South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana in the United States of America.

The vulnerable, feathered youngster
Hatched from an elongated egg much like a modern bird, STAN was defenceless as an infant and, according to recent scientific research, covered in feathers. Many of his fellow hatchlings would have perished by the age of one, victims to scavengers or cannibalised by another T. rex.

Although he would grow up to become an apex predator, STAN remained vulnerable as a juvenile. No larger than a small turkey, he required the constant protection of his parents. Between the ages of six and 18, however, he underwent an astonishing growth spurt of an estimated six pounds per day.

Almost 40 feet long, nose to tail, with incredible eyesight
At his largest, STAN would have boasted a body mass of between seven and eight tons — twice as heavy as the average modern African elephant. He measured a towering 13 feet high, and almost 40 feet long with his heavy tail fully outstretched.

His aquiline snout once housed an intricate system of blood vessels, functioning as a giant biological air conditioner. With eyes the size of baseballs, STAN would have been able to pinpoint another dinosaur from six kilometres away — a range far superior to any bird of prey today.

Added to these attributes, STAN possessed an impressive sense of smell, as revealed by the internal structure of his enormous skull. Although a preserved T. rex brain has yet to be found, the impression left behind reveals that the largest part of the brain was dedicated to the ‘olfactory bulbs’.

Agility, cunning and brute strength — STAN’s bite could easily have crushed a car
The large space set aside for these ‘bulbs’ confirms STAN was a carnivore. They would also have equipped him for hunting at night and over long distances. Through this potent combination of agility, cunning, and brute strength, STAN would have thrived as a predator with no competitors or threats other than his fellow T. rexes.

While his short, two-fingered forearms were less than impressive — prone to disease and, unfortunately given his prodigious appetite, too short to reach his mouth — they most probably came in useful for seizing prey or carcasses.

This is just as well, for it is thought STAN could eat up to 500lbs of meat in one bite. He had as many as 58 teeth, the longest of which measures 11½ inches. Each tooth has serrated edges which could crush and slice straight through the flesh and bone of its prey.

In 2005, STAN’s skull was reproduced and tested to recreate a bite force of four tons per square inch — easily enough to crush a car. A 2012 study concluded that STAN’s front teeth had probably evolved to grip and pull, while his side teeth tore flesh and his back teeth sliced chunks of meat, forcing them down into the throat.

In the swamps and forests where he lived, STAN survived attacks from his own species
Further study of STAN’s impressive skull reveals that his life was not exactly carefree. Vicious puncture wounds neatly fitting a T. rex tooth strongly suggest he was himself a wounded warrior who suffered attacks by his own species. Though unaccustomed to running from anything, his powerful thigh muscles enabled STAN to move at a speed of between 10 and 25 mph.

STAN and his kind lived in coastal swamps and forested valleys close to rivers, which attracted a variety of prey. Although debate has raged as to whether the T. rex was a hunter or a scavenger, STAN was fully equipped for pursuit independently or in a group of Tyrannosaurs (aptly known as a ‘terror’).

His killer instinct was confirmed during the excavation of his skeleton in 1992, when he was found with the fossilised and partially digested remains of an Edmontosaurus, a large duck-billed dinosaur, and a Triceratops, a hulking three-horned dinosaur which, despite being a herbivore and potential prey to the T. rex, would have been a formidable opponent. These bones each had bite marks, revealing how STAN could hunt, kill, and devour even the largest and most well-protected herbivores.

Amateur palaeontologist Stan Sacrison’s incredible discovery
After STAN died and decomposed, his skeleton was gradually blanketed and compacted by sediment, sand and mud. The incredible survival of his skeleton is the result of fossilisation, a transformational process which took place over millions of years.

Over time, STAN’s organic bones were mineralised by water seeping through the sediment, which then hardened into the stone relics discovered in the spring of 1987, when amateur palaeontologist Stan Sacrison went searching for traces of dinosaurs within the Hell Creek Formation, and uncovered a dinosaur’s fossilised hip bone, which was later confirmed to have been STAN’s.

The most widely exhibited dinosaur of all time

Each individual fossil from STAN’s skeleton had to be prised carefully from the rock, then stored and recorded. Following more than 30,000 hours of labour, STAN was erected on a custom mount to reflect his former glory. He was given a public unveiling on Hill City’s Main Street in South Dakota, followed by his global ‘debut’ as the centrepiece of Japan’s T. rex World Exposition in 1995.

More than 30 years after his discovery, STAN is recognised and revered as a scientific and cultural sensation. As one of the two most complete T. rex skeletons ever found — and the most reproduced as casts in history — he is almost certainly the most viewed and widely exhibited dinosaur of all time.

STAN is now on view at Christie’s in New York. Email TREX@christies.com to request an appointment.

RM Sotheby´s1960 Porsche 356 RSR Outlaw by MOMO/Emory

RM | Online Only – SHIFT/MONTEREY 14 – 15 AUGUST 2020

Chassis No.
109153

Made available through RM Sotheby’s, this 1960 Porsche 356 RSR Outlaw Coupe was customized in a collaboration between Milan-based Momo and Rod Emory, who cut his teeth working with Outlaws. The foundation is a 964-generation Porsche 911 with striking aluminum body wrapping its way around the exterior. The twin-turbocharged Emory-Rothsport Outlaw-4 engine gives the sports car plenty of grunt at 394 hp.

Third-generation car customizer/renowned early Porsche expert Rod Emory pulled a lifetime of automotive expertise together to create an exotic 1960 Porsche 356 RSR. As a grandson of one of Los Angeles’s first hot-rod shop owners, the son of the Baja Bug creator, and a former Top Fuel mechanic and competitive off-road racer, Rod was able to leverage every ounce of his automotive DNA in this builder’s dream project.

“It started back in 2012 when I had my friend Greg Macey sketch a concept I had had in mind for quite some time,” Rod Emory says. “The idea was to create an homage to the Porsche works 935 cars of the 1970s while retaining our Emory 356 Outlaw styling. Greg did phenomenal sketches, which we posted on Instagram. MOMO CEO Henrique Cisneros reached out and asked what it would take to turn the concept into reality. Once we zeroed in on the details, we had a second rendering done by Avedis Djinguelian to serve as a more representative style guide to the finished product. The actual build time was about four full years.”

As with other Emory Outlaw and Emory Special builds, the project began with the perfect donor car: a 1960 356B T5 coupe whose roof was undamaged but the rest of the body panels were destined for scrap.

With fresh experience combining a 356 body and 911 chassis in the world’s first AWD 356 (the Emory/Independent Fabrication 356C4S project), Rod’s crew knew where to nip/tuck to combine the best of the two Porsche sportscar iterations, some 35 years apart in age. The result is a seamless super-performance concoction whose 356 silhouette is artfully preserved, thanks to its factory greenhouse and doors. This car is an example of Emory Motorsports’ highest-performance “RS” designated cars.

To merge the Porsche unibodies, the difference in wheelbase was essentially split (85mm) with a clever redistribution of the length. However, all of the stock 964 suspension pick-up points were retained. Also, the engine frame section was tailored to a length appropriate for a 356-correct air-cooled four.

Speaking of which, the exotic Emory-Rothsport twin-turbo Outlaw-4 engine produced a whopping 393 horsepower on Rothsport Racing’s engine dyno – incredible in a car that weighs only 1,950 pounds. This proprietary engine block, developed by and only available in Emory Motorsports builds, is a collaboration between Rod Emory and Jeff Gamroth of Rothsport Racing. The “Outlaw-4” engine’s architecture is based on the dry-sump Porsche 3.6L powerplant from the 1990s. To get the crazy power, Rothsport Racing created a purpose-built fuel-injection system with a one-off intake plenum and twin-plug distributor, managed by a Motec computer. The RSR race-inspired twin-turbo system uses two Garrett GT28R ball-bearing turbos with Turbosmart wastegates, backed by custom intercoolers. A dash-mounted 935-style boost control knob allows dialing up as much as 1.2 bar boost from the turbos.

Other Outlaw-4 details include a full-flow oil system with remote filter and cooler, plumbed with XRP lines and fittings. Also, Rothsport Racing fabricated a custom 3-2-1 stainless-steel exhaust system, which ends with a muffler-less straight pipe. The fuel system includes an 18-gallon Fuel Safe fuel cell, cradling a Radium FCST fuel delivery system.

The 356 RSR’s suspension was designed around the extreme power-to-weight ratio. Ride is controlled by KW coilovers with 1.5 inches of on-demand lift to negotiate driveway aprons. Eisenlohr Racing Products front camber plates and mono-ball mounts make for additional adjustability. Flatter cornering is made possible by Tarett Engineering swaybars. Also, the 964 non-power rack-and-pinion steering and brakes were retained, albeit with custom Coleman Racing rotors and hats.

Competition components were one of the project’s springboards, but street-legality was the goal. Rod Emory has an affinity for the MOMO 5-spoke wheels with centerlock hubs from the Porsche works 935. Wheels like those were at the top of his must-have list. One bespoke set of MOMO Heritage center-lock wheels were created just for this car; fronts are 17×7 and the rears are 17×8, wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires.

“People had strong reactions when we debuted the 356 RSR at Luftgekühlt this past May,” Rod Emory said. “It was too over-the-top even for some of the forgiving purists – something we’re used to after being branded Outlaws by the period-correct owners decades ago – but the car definitely attracted a lot of attention and now serves as a benchmark for what we can do with Porsche’s extremely flexible platforms.”

SCARLET-SPLENDOUR-1animagic

“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” Pushing the boundaries of shape and form, Matteo’s ANIMAGIC collection is a celebration of animal forms in andromorphous design. An odd mix of humour, luxury and utility, these pieces go beyond being furniture – they are magical, sculptural objects, almost life like, that make you smile every time you glance at them.

SCARLET-SPLENDOUR-1animagic

SCARLET-SPLENDOUR-1animagic

Scarlet Splendour – Animagic

Wedged somewhere in fantasy land between Willy Wonka and Alice in Wonderland, these luxury designer pieces will blow your mind. Meet Scarlet Splendour.

Scarlet Splendour: the first time we’ve ever used the company name, which describes exactly who they are, as the title of an article. The hot colours of India, the hot stars of the silver screen and the splendour that all this evokes. Add a large dollop of humour, the extraordinary design skills of its founders, Indian craftsmanship and best of what Italy offers the world of international furniture design, and success is almost a given.

Almost, but not quite. Like a meal prepared by a top chef, all the ingredients must be measured and fall in exactly the right places, and of course, a key element is entrepreneurship. Siblings Ashish Bajoria and Suman Kanodia debuted their first collection of 15 pieces, titled Vanilla Noir, during the Milan Design Week in 2015, paying homage to the era of silent movies with their light-hearted irony and underlying depth in black and white, and they pulled it off with only three month’s preparation. Little wonder then that this Kolkata-based brand has expanded so rapidly.

More than 50 trips to various Italian cities and regions later, the founders realised that bringing European design and Indian craftsmanship together is what creates the kind of previously unseen synergy they were aiming for. Scarlet Splendour successfully transcends geographical borders while staying true to its mission: to preserve the artisan traditions of India and open them up to the rest of the world through top international design.

Above: The Ciuco Cabinet by Matteo Cibic is a decadent conversation piece.

The pieces, whose design link to India is mainly in the colours and certain design details of the whole, veer between surrealism, absurdism, Art Deco, the playful works of artists like Barry Flanagan and Jeff Koons, and not least, functionalism, although in time, perhaps, they themselves will become an “ism”.

Each piece is startling: “For us the drama is all about standing out and creating impact”, and each has been designed by the founders or their top-notch collaborators and made to the highest standards of Indian craftsmanship. Each also has an element of fun, from the rabbits’ heads and ears on otherwise fairly sober drinks cabinets to the outrageous shapes, doors and other details. To see their Madame Verdoux cabinet from the Vanilla Noir collection, for example, is to both have a laugh at the absurdity of a two-metre high water bottle and to look into the colonial past of India itself. To see the spidery legs on their Nika Zupanc pieces, which seem to float above the floor, is to realise the genius of 1950s furniture design, and to see the 88 Secrets Bar cabinet is to know that these people have a fine respect for the Art Deco period. Plainly put, they know their stuff.

Above: Siblings Ashish Bajoria and Suman Kanodia

UDesign talked to Ashish Bajoria shortly after the release of the brand’s latest collection, which brings together designers from Italy, Slovenia and Holland.

The motto of your company is “Craft, drama and luxury”. Where does the drama fit in?

Each product is hand-made, each is a luxury piece, and each is dramatic and maximalist as well. We know it creates a certain drama in the space around it, wherever it is. For us the drama is about standing out and creating impact. I don’t want to call them statement pieces, but they are indeed dramatic.
