Together with William Bradley, he finished second in Zeltweg driving a private Porsche 906 Carrera 6. Porsche engaged Attwood for the World Sportscar Championship two years later in 1969, and from then on he was retained under contract as a works driver.

He raced in the World Championship for Makes in a Porsche 908/02, and came second in both Brands Hatch and Watkins Glen together with Vic Elford. In the season finale in Zeltweg, he finished third with Brian Redman in the 917. Together with Hans Herrmann, he took part in the Nürburgring 1,000 km driving a Porsche 908/03 in 1970 – finishing in 2nd place.

The first overall victory in the most important endurance race in the world is considered to be one of the greatest racing successes of the sports car manufacturer from Zuffenhausen. On 14 June 1970, Porsche achieved the first of a total of 19 overall victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

After exactly 4,607.811 kilometres or 343 laps, Richard Attwood and Hans Herrmann crossed the finishing line first in the legendary Porsche 917 KH from Porsche Salzburg with the start number 23. “Unlike what many people may think, I never did any testing in the 917. I drove a 917 for the first time in a qualifying race in 1969,” says Attwood looking back. “In 1970 I did not believe for a minute that we had even the slightest hope of winning.”


In 1971, he achieved another first place in the 1,000 kilometre race at the Österreichring. Richard Attwood retired from active motor racing at the end of the season at the age of just 31. His last podium finish was in 1971 together with Derek Bell in the 917 KH at the season finale of the World Sportscar Championship in Watkins Glen (3rd place). However, the now 80 year-old was not quite ready to fully enjoy his retirement. In 1984, he finished 15th in Daytona in a Porsche 928. Today, Attwood still accompanies the Porsche Museum to its driving events at renowned classic car meets all over the world. Among other things, he can be seen at the Festival of Speed in Goodwood, the Sound Night as well as at various historic motorsports events.

The British brand Apex Motors has introduced an all-electric sports car called AP-0. The EV is scheduled to go into production at the end of 2022, and Apex says prices will start at 150,000 pounds (before taxes). Down payments are already accepted.

Apex speaks of the AP-0 as an electric sports car inspired by racing and approved for road use. The rear-mounted electric motor produces 484 kW and accelerates the AP-0 from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.3 seconds. The top speed is stated as 306 kph. In contrast to many of the electric sports cars presented so far, such as the Pininfarina Battista, Lotus Evija or the Rimac C_Two, the AP-0 will only have one motor.

A battery pack with 90 kWh will provide energy storage, which should enable a WLTP range of 515 kilometres. Using CCS, it should be possible to charge the battery to 80 per cent in less than 15 minutes. If the 90 kWh energy content of the battery is the usable net value, this would correspond to an average charging capacity of 288 kW. A full charge with alternating current should take eight hours. If the 90 kWh is also considered as a basis here, this results in an AC charging capacity of exactly 11 kW.

Due to the extensive use of carbon fibres (including the safety cell for the occupants, some body parts and the rims), the AP-0 is expected to weigh only about 1.2 tons. Despite its focus on being a drivable sports car, the Apex should be able to drive semi-autonomously. For this purpose, the vehicle is to be equipped with its lidar sensor, among other things, which will be able to identify pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles precisely. We are talking about an autonomous system according to level 3, which can later be extended with updates to a level 4 system.

But of course, the unusual design of the AP-0 is striking. The designers were able to dispense with large cooling openings because of the absence of a combustion engine, only as in other mid- or rear-engined sports cars there are air inlets in front of the rear wheels.

Even more striking than the front with its angular lines is the rear. In addition to the continuous rear light strips that are now increasingly used, the AP-0 has additional vertical brake light. This extends from the shark fin to the diffuser.

Production in England is scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2022. The plant near Woking should be able to produce up to 500 AP-0s per year. The starting price of 150,000 pounds is currently around 165,000 euros, but here the usual local taxes are added.

Before the twelve-cylinder engine, which normally powers the Mercedes S 600 L with a rated output of 390 kW / 530 hp (523 bhp), was fitted into the engine bay of the current G-Class, it was thoroughly revised in our BRABUS hi-tech engine shop using state-of-the-art machining equipment. The installation of a special billet BRABUS crankshaft with longer stroke and the combination of larger cylinder bores, matching forged pistons and special precision-balanced billet connecting rods result in a displacement increase from stock 6.0 to 6.3 liters (366 to 384 cu in).

Changes to the engine peripherals also play a major role in the tremendous power output. The two production turbos are replaced by turbos with larger compressor unit and modified exhaust manifolds, which produce a higher boost pressure than the production components. The conversion includes downpipes with a diameter of 80 millimeters (3.1 in), free-flow metal catalysts and a BRABUS stainless high-performance exhaust system with actively controlled flaps. Thanks to the integrated sound management, the driver can choose between a throaty V12 exhaust note in ‘Sport’ mode and the discreet sound in “Coming Home” mode. The all- stainless exhaust system is also a visual treat. The two black-chromed tailpipes on the IAA show car exiting in front of the rear wheels on either side also add some visually thrilling highlights

Just as important is an optimal air supply for the engine. To this end, the BRABUS power unit engineers developed the BRABUS 900 intake module. The new intake manifold includes a special air filter box with larger cross-section and special filters, as well as “Gold Heat Reflection” sheathing to lower the temperature.

The reprogrammed engine electronics with special mapping for injection and ignition as well a modified boost pressure control coordinate the perfect interaction of the high-performance components and in this way lend the high-end engine a unique combination of explosive power delivery and the hallmark smooth running of a V12. Technology partner MOTUL supplies the hi-tech lubricants for the entire powertrain.

As the result of the extensive work, the BRABUS 900 6.3 V12 Biturbo engine delivers unparalleled performance figures: The peak output of 662 kW / 900 hp (888 bhp) is on tap at a low 5,500 rpm. Even more phenomenal is the peak torque of 1,500 Nm (1,106 lb-ft) at 4,200 rpm. This figure is limited electronically in the vehicle to 1,200 Nm (885 lb-ft).

The power is sent to all four wheels by a nine-speed automatic transmission, which can be shifted even more precisely with the BRABUS RACE paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

The vehicle performance speaks for itself: From rest, the BRABUS G V12 900 “ONE OF TEN” shoots to 62 mph in just 3.8 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 174 mph. Accordingly, the new supercar is also equipped with a BRABUS speedometer with 186-mph scale.

A wider track optimizes the handling and driving safety at these speeds and consequently the new supercar is fitted with the thrilling BRABUS WIDESTAR widebody. The strikingly styled fender flares add ten centimeters (4 in) to the width of the body and thereby offer plenty of space for massive forged wheels with diameters of 23 or 24 inches

The bodywork modifications also captivate with the BRABUS fasciae at the front and rear, which precisely transition into the WIDESTAR fenders. The front element is fitted with large air intakes to provide the engine, radiators and brakes with the necessary supply of fresh air. The stylized skid plate on this supercar is made of naked carbon.

The auxiliary LED lights under the side air intakes, which on the show car are also made of naked carbon, add to the dynamic looks and optimize the active safety at the same time. The hood is given a striking upgrade with a carbon attachment featuring two integrated power bulges. This also creates space for the large V12. The BRABUS Branding Package with illuminated BRABUS logo for the radiator grille with carbon surround and additional badges on the rear end and the sides of the off-roader reveals the origin of this unique all-wheel-drive supercar.

The BRABUS roof wing with naked-carbon highlights gives the rear end of the vehicle even more exciting looks. The BRABUS rear fascia with stylized skid plate, which like the surround for the two rear reflectors was produced from naked carbon, creates a homogeneous transition to the WIDESTAR fenders, which like the front flares feature stylized naked-carbon air vents in their backs to ensure a sporty appearance. In addition, all chrome parts on the show car were painted in vehicle color. Naked-carbon covers for the side mirrors round off the sporty BRABUS look.

The BRABUS G V12 900 “ONE OF TEN” on show at the IAA 2019 in Frankfurt presents another world premiere, the new BRABUS Monoblock “PLATINUM EDITION” Z wheels with a diameter of 24 inches developed specifically for the Mercedes G-Class. As the result of being produced using hi-tech forging technology, these ten-spoke alloys offer an outstanding combination of lightweight construction and maximum strength. The BRABUS WIDESTAR widebody uses wheels ten inches wide at the front mounted with size 295/30 R 24 tires. The rear axle runs on wheels of size 12Jx24 with 355/25 R 24 tires.

Alternatively, the BRABUS G V12 900 can also be ordered with BRABUS Monoblock Y “PLATINUM EDITION“ forged wheels of sizes 10Jx23 and 12Jx23, which carry high-performance tires from technology partner CONTINENTAL of sizes 295/35 ZR 23 and 335/30 ZR 23.

For a perfect combination of high ride quality and safe, sporty handling, the BRABUS G V12 900 “ONE OF TEN” is equipped with the innovative Ride Control coilover suspension, whose damping is tailored specifically to the axle loads with the twelve-cylinder engine. It is connected to the standard-fit DYNAMIC SELECT suspension controller in the cockpit, which allows dialing in various setups for the suspension, powertrain, steering and assistance systems. In addition, the ride height of the suspension can be adjusted.

LEXUS CREATES MOON MOBILITY CONCEPT SKETCH FOR LUNAR DESIGN PORTFOLIO

Joining an elite group of design industry luminaries, the luxury automaker was selected to contribute a suite of design concept drawings to Document Journal’s prestigious portfolio

For Document Journal‘s issue No. 15, the art & fashion magazine invited a selection of the culture’s most compelling architects and designers to find their inner Major Toms and imagine human life on the moon for The Lunar Design Portfolio. How shall we live? What will it look like? What will we wear? What will we drive?

ED2, the European Advanced Design Studio for Toyota and Lexus dedicated to advanced concept proposals and groundbreaking design, was selected to contribute a lunar mobility concept.  Drawing on the just-released LF-30 Future Concept vehicle, the studio created a series of 7 concepts from 5 different designers, a full lineup of space vehicles ready to tackle the lunar landscape.

When Document Journal approached us about the Lunar Design Portfolio, our team was working on the LF-30 Concept, which represents the “Lexus Electrified” futuristic vision for Lexus. The design team was already looking beyond near-term production and ahead to how advanced technology will change the way we interact with vehicles,” said Ian Cartabiano, President of ED2.  “The lunar project came at the right time, half way through the LF-30 development. It gave the team a chance to dream further out, and then apply some of the design language from the LF-30 interior to their lunar proposals.”

Zero Gravity, the concept sketch selected to appear in the print issue of the magazine, is a single rider vehicle that evolves the LF-30’s “Lexus Electrified” vision to incorporate Magnetic Levitation technology.  The design reinterprets the signature Lexus spindle grille and uses the motorcycle-style of driving to employ the new concept of Tazuna (which mean “reins” in Japanese): the fundamental human-centered philosophy.  Inspired by how a single rein can be used to achieve mutual understanding between horse and rider, the steering control provides active driving enjoyment created by the direct communication between human and machine.

The vehicle is divided into two parts: the bottom consists of a platform with 6 rugged wheels to give the freedom to go wherever you want. The upper part holds the living area. The two components of the vehicle can be also divided, with the upper portion detaching to create the start of a lunar colony.
