The Maison’s 36th appearance as world sponsor andofficial timekeeper
Chopard is proud to return to Brescia for the 36th time in succession as the World Sponsor and Official Timekeeper of the 1000 Miglia – otherwise known as ‘the most beautiful race in the world’. The partnership represents one of the longest in history between a watchmaker and an automobile event, signifying Chopard’s well known love of classic cars and its passion for motorsport. That passion is further confirmed by the fact that 2023 marks the 35th occasion that Chopard co-president Karl-Friedrich Scheufele will compete in the race from Brescia to Rome and back, having first taken part in 1989 with six-times Le Mans 24 Hours winner Jacky Ickx in the navigator’s seat. The pair will team-up again this year (as on more than a dozen previous occasions), once more tackling the gruelling course in the instantly recognisable ‘metallic raspberry’ Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing in which they made their 1000 Miglia debut. And, of course, Chopard will continue its tradition of introducing new Mille Miglia timepieces, with four Mille Miglia Classic Chronographs, plus an additional, very special ‘Italian Limited Edition’ of the Mille Miglia GTS Chronograph – some of the proceeds from which will be donated to victims of the recent Emilia-Romagna flood disaster.
A new route, a new city – and an extra day
The 1000 Miglia was first run in 1927 but – in keeping with its reputation for never growing old – this year’s event features a new route and will be run over the course of five days rather than the usual four. For the first time the race will incorporate a section from Parma to Milan, a city never before included in the 1000 Miglia and the location from which the 405 starters will make their home run to Brescia on the final day (Saturday, June 17th).
In between, the course takes them in a clockwise direction, with day one ending in an overnight stop on the coast at Cervio-Milano Marittima. An early start on Wednesday sends the group to the tiny, hilltop republic of San Marino (the fifth smallest country in the world) and up to 300 metres above sea level for a lunch break in Macerata, a town renowned for its striking palazzos and annual opera festival. The day finishes in Rome when the cars will parade around the city, followed by a dawn start on Thursday for the six-hour run to lunch in Siena (scene of the historic Palio horse race).
After tackling the famous Abertone Pass – frequently used by Ferrari’s test drivers – the crews end-up in Parma where they spend the night before heading out on Friday morning to begin the ‘home run,’ stopping at Piacenza military airport to mark the centenary of the Aeronautica Militare Italiana. After lunch in Alessandria and a further five hours on the road, the competitors will check-in at the new Milan time control point before dinner and a well-earned night’s rest.
A civilised 8am start on Saturday marks the beginning of the final 100 kilometres of the course, which will take the surviving cars back to the finish at Brescia where they will parade along the tree-lined Viale Venezia.
Two cars compete for Team Chopard
In addition to the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing crewed by Karl-Friedrich Scheufele and Jacky Ickx, Chopard Ambassadors Zhu Yilong, the acclaimed Chinese actor, and Romain Dumas, the celebrated endurance racing driver, will also compete under the ‘Team Chopard’ banner in a 1955 Porsche 356 Speedster.
A pre-start dinner in a stunning setting
But before the flag drops to wave the first car off the Brescia start ramp on Tuesday (June 13th), Karl-Friedrich Scheufele will host a special welcome dinner at the beautiful and historic L’Albereta hotel, just 20km from Brescia and close to the shores of Lake Iseo within the breathtakingly beautiful Lombardy countryside. Here, guests will discover the new Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph collection that celebrates this year’s race – maintaining Chopard’s tradition of creating an all-new, dedicated design that has prevailed each year since 1988.
The 2023 Mille Miglia watches – the tradition continues
Comprising four new models crafted in Chopard’s exclusive Lucent Steel™ (50 per cent more resilient than regular steel and incorporating material recycled from the medical, aerospace, car and watch industries), the 40mm chronographs are fitted either with the Maison’s signature rubber strap based on the pattern of a ‘60s Dunlop race tyre or a rich brown calfskin leather strap evoking traditional driving gloves.
What makes this year’s Mille Miglia Classic Chronographs extra-special, however, are their dials: each of the four variations is based on the paint hues and interior finishes typically found on the type of pre-1957 cars that are eligible for the 1000 Miglia. That means a choice of Rosso Amarena (cherry red), Grigio-Blu (grey blue), Verde Chiaro (light green) and Nero Corsa (racing black). In keeping with a 36-year tradition, each watch carries a miniature ‘1000 Miglia’ route marker on its dial and case back.
In addition to the Mille Miglia Classic Chronographs, Chopard has also produced a very special version of its larger Mille Miglia GTS Chrono. Being made from Lucent Steel™ in just 100 examples, part of the proceeds from each sale will be donated to victims of the devastating floods that swept through the Emilia-Romagna region in early May. This 44mm edition carries the green and red colours of Italy, with its olive green bezel featuring a tachymeter scale for speed and distance calculations. Further marking-out the ‘form and function’ nature of Chopard’s Mille Miglia watches, the Mille Miglia GTS Chrono Limited Edition Italy is also fitted with substantial ‘mushroom’ pushers and a large diameter crown to provide a firm grip and ease of use while on the road.
Both the Chopard Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph editions and the Mille Miglia GTS Chrono Limited Edition Italy are the prefect watches for anyone taking part in ‘the most beautiful race in the world’ as well as for those who follow it. And whether you are one or the other, we wish you a thrilling but safe journey to the finish.

Admitted cars
A maximum number of 40 modern and historic cars will be admitted to the competition. Cars produced up to 1990 will be given priority in the selection.
From Sorrento to the Gulf of Naples, the Royal Palace of Caserta, the Amalfi Coast and back to Sorrento
Sorrento, the heart of the event and departure and arrival point on race days. Built on the cliff that separates it from the characteristic harbor, its historic center is a maze of narrow streets bustling with cafés, shops and typical artisans.
The walk between Piazza Tasso, the Cathedral, the church of San Francesco with its renowned cloister, Corso Italia, the citrus groves and the seafront promenade facing the Bay of Naples will offer participants a pleasant immersion in the town overlooking the sea.
The Gulf of Naples is universally recognized as one of the most beautiful corners of the world: historic and architectural treasures, wonders of antiquity and more recent history as well as fascinating natural scenery attract tourists from all over the world every year.
With Vesuvius, Capri, Ischia and Procida on the horizon, the Gulf has three large inlets: the small bay of Pozzuoli, the port of Naples and the bay of Castellammare.
There are two key entry passages: Bocca Grande, between Ischia and Capri, and Bocca Piccola, between Capri and Punta Campanella.
Designed in the 18th century by Luigi Vanvitelli at the behest of Charles III of Bourbon, the Royal Palace of Caserta is the triumph of Italian Baroque.
The beauty of the interiors, which include the King’s and Queen’s Apartments, the Palatine Library, the Picture Gallery and the Historical Archives, among others. The magnificence of the Park, divided into an Italian-style garden and an English garden, covers an area of 120 hectares and is almost three kilometers long, undoubtedly recalling the opulence of the Palace of Versailles.
The Amalfi Coast, characterized by an unrivalled gastronomic tradition, small towns overlooking the sea and a priceless historical heritage, stretches from Positano to Vietri sul Mare.
Characterized by high cliffs, enchanting coves and small bays, terraces of citrus fruits, vines, olive groves and artisan workshops, it is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as a perfect example of a Mediterranean landscape with a setting of great cultural and natural value.
Entries are now open for the 2023 edition of Sorrento Roads by 1000 Miglia, the spring event that from March 30 to April 2 will offer a small number of participants the chance to immerse themselves in one of the world’s most envied Mediterranean landscapes.
Like last year, Sorrento is confirmed as the heart of the event: in fact, from here, on Friday, March 31, the “on the road” day will start, taking the participating cars to discover first the Royal Palace of Caserta and then the Amalfi Coast, offering the beauty of the view of high cliffs, enchanting coves, small bays and terraces of citrus fruits, vines, and olive trees.
The day of Saturday, April 1, will take place entirely in the center of Sorrento, where the participating cars will parade before being displayed for the Popular Jury’s evaluation. This will be followed by the 1 vs. 1 challenge in the city center, a knockout regularity trial that will award the City of Sorrento Trophy and conclude the sporting part of the event.
The Prize-Giving Ceremony and Gala Dinner will offer participants the chance to enjoy the food and wine delicacies of Campania and the warm hospitality of the area and its enthusiasts.

1932 DUESENBERG J FIGONI SPORTS TORPEDO NAMED BEST OF SHOW AT THE 71ST PEBBLE BEACH CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (August 21, 2022) — A unique Duesenberg reprised its early role as Concours winner by taking the top prize at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
This year, 220 cars from 19 countries and 33 states pulled onto the competition field of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and the car named Best of Show was the 1932 Duesenberg J Figoni Sports Torpedo of Lee R. Anderson Sr.
“This rare Duesenberg marries American might with European style,” said Concours Chairman Sandra Button. “It did well in some early rallies and concours. Then, its history took a turn, with chassis separated from body. The story of its resurrection is one of pure passion.”
An American car last won Best of Show in 2013, when a 1934 Packard Twelve took the top spot. Duesenberg has long been the winningest American marque at Pebble Beach, with six prior wins; this win brings its total to seven.
“My goodness, we’re overwhelmed,” Penny Anderson exclaimed. “We just can’t believe we won Best of Show! We’ve met so many people through the years, enjoyed all the people that participate. It’s just a joy and an honor to be here.”
“We’ve been doing this for years, and we’ve come close in the past,“ said Lee, “but we’ve never won actually, so Penny is right, it’s overwhelming. All the preparation—the story behind this car is just amazing. There’s only one Figoni Duesenberg, ever ever, and it’s this one right here. So, it’s like all these things coming together to make a real champion. We’re so excited.”
This year’s race for Best of Show featured other strong contenders, including Fritz Burkard’s 1937 Talbot-Lago T150C-SS Figoni & Falaschi Teardrop Coupé, Sam and Emily Mann’s 1930 Duesenberg J Graber Cabriolet, and Merle and Peter Mullin’s 1951 Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport Stabilimenti Farina Cabriolet.
The Pebble Beach Concours raised more than $2.67 million for charity this year, bringing the event’s total charitable donations to over $35 million to date. Through the Pebble Beach Company Foundation, the primary charitable partner of the Concours, these funds will benefit more than 95 local charities, impacting the lives of more than 10,000 children annually in Monterey County.
Gooding & Company, the official auction house of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, concluded its 18th annual Pebble Beach Auctions this weekend, realizing over $105 million in sales. Several star cars set new world records, including the 1990 Ferrari F40, which sold for $3,965,000, and the 1994 Bugatti EB110 Super Sport, which achieved $3,167,500. The top sale of the weekend was a stunningly elegant 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante, which achieved a final sale price of $10,345,000.
The 72nd Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will take place on Sunday, August 20, 2023, and will celebrate famed coachbuilder Joseph Figoni and Pegaso. Additional 2023 features include Invicta, Mercedes-Benz S / SS / SSK, McLaren, Alvis, and American Dream Cars of the 1950s—with more features to be announced in the early fall.
1932 DUESENBERG J FIGONI SPORTS TORPEDO NOMBRADO BEST OF SHOW EN EL 71ST PEBBLE BEACH CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE
“¡Simplemente no podemos creer que ganamos Best of Show!
