On the 60th anniversary of its journey aboard the Aurora 7 spacecraft, the mythic watch with the 24-hour dial is set to lift off once again in a new release that pays tribute to the historic mission.
To mark the occasion, Breitling offered the first-ever public viewing of the original Cosmonaute since 1962—and revealed the watch’s incredible story.

kind of Space Race was quietly underway. This time, between watchmakers vying to be the first on astronauts’ wrists.

Breitling’s expertise in aviation watches shot the brand to the head of the pack. On May 24, 1962, Breitling officially claimed the title “first Swiss wristwatch in space” after astronaut Scott Carpenter orbited the Earth three times while wearing the Navitimer Cosmonaute during his Mercury-Atlas 7 mission. The watch had been Carpenter’s personal request, a variation on the iconic aviator’s watch he’d encountered in his flight days, but with a 24-hour dial to tell day from night in space.

Today—on the 60th anniversary of that mission—Breitling not only unveiled Carpenter’s original Navitimer Cosmonaute, but also launched a modern tribute to it. This special release is limited to 362 pieces that recognize both the spacecraft’s circumnavigations of the Earth and the year the mission made history, marking a crucial step in manned spaceflight.

A PIECE OF SPACE HISTORY IN A FIRST-TIME PUBLIC VIEWING

On May 24, 1962, five hours after launch, the Aurora 7 space capsule with Carpenter aboard splashed down safely in the Atlantic. The recovery operation lasted three hours, with the long
exposure to seawater resulting in irreparable damage to Carpenter’s Cosmonaute. Breitling immediately replaced Carpenter’s watch, but that battered and corroded piece of space history
remained in the Breitling family archives—unrestored and widely unknown. That is, until today.

 

Now, exactly 60 years after its historic flight, that great space watch was exhibited for the first time to select collectors, journalists, and watch enthusiasts at a space-themed event in Zurich.
It was an afternoon of lively interaction, co-hosted by Georges Kern and former NASA astronaut Scott Kelly, and featuring an impressive lineup of guest speakers that included members of the
Carpenter family, Gregory Breitling, and historian and collector Fred Mandelbaum. The panelists reflected on the Cosmonaute’s creation, the significance of Carpenter’s mission, and how both
fit into the wider context of the space program at the time.

THE 24-HOUR WATCH, COMMEMORATIVE AND REFRESHED

The Cosmonaute is a true Navitimer, meaning it has all the hallmarks of Breitling’s aviation icon: the circular slide rule for performing mathematical calculations, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots
Association “wings” logo, and the trio of chronograph subdials. What separates the Cosmonaute from the rest of its family is its ability to tell 24-hour time. The Breitling Manufacture Caliber B02
was specifically designed for this task.

At first glance, the new Cosmonaute is a faithful reproduction of the original, made timeless with an all-black dial and black alligator strap or seven-row stainless-steel bracelet. On closer inspection, though, the elegantly proportioned 41 mm watch is packed with new features. One is its platinum bezel, a premium touch that makes this edition even more of a collector’s piece.

Another is its open sapphire crystal caseback that provides a window on the B02 movement with its special bridge engravings to mark the occasion: the words “Carpenter,” “Aurora 7,” and “3
orbits around the Earth,” along with the name of the original group of seven astronauts chosen for NASA’s first human-crewed spaceflights, Mercury 7.

While other watch brands have claims to space firsts, only Breitling can call itself the “first Swiss wristwatch in space.” The only other Swiss timepiece to have reached orbit previously was a
pocket stopwatch equipped with a strap. The Cosmonaute, meanwhile—a wristwatch worn in space and designed according to an astronaut’s specifications—was kept precisely to those specs when it became available for purchase in 1962. Not only did the 24-hour timepiece go on to become a hit amongst collectors, it was frequently spotted on other astronauts’ wrists.

También se exhibió un Cosmonaute que alguna vez fue propiedad del astronauta John Glenn y adquirido en una subasta en 2019 por Gregory Breitling.

EL RELOJ DE 24 HORAS, CONMEMORATIVO Y RENOVADO

A PIECE OF SPACE HISTORY IN A FIRST-TIME PUBLIC VIEWING

On May 24, 1962, five hours after launch, the Aurora 7 space capsule with Carpenter aboard splashed down safely in the Atlantic. The recovery operation lasted three hours, with the long
exposure to seawater resulting in irreparable damage to Carpenter’s Cosmonaute. Breitling immediately replaced Carpenter’s watch, but that battered and corroded piece of space history
remained in the Breitling family archives—unrestored and widely unknown. That is, until today.

 

Now, exactly 60 years after its historic flight, that great space watch was exhibited for the first time to select collectors, journalists, and watch enthusiasts at a space-themed event in Zurich.
It was an afternoon of lively interaction, co-hosted by Georges Kern and former NASA astronaut Scott Kelly, and featuring an impressive lineup of guest speakers that included members of the
Carpenter family, Gregory Breitling, and historian and collector Fred Mandelbaum. The panelists reflected on the Cosmonaute’s creation, the significance of Carpenter’s mission, and how both
fit into the wider context of the space program at the time.

THE 24-HOUR WATCH, COMMEMORATIVE AND REFRESHED

The Cosmonaute is a true Navitimer, meaning it has all the hallmarks of Breitling’s aviation icon: the circular slide rule for performing mathematical calculations, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots
Association “wings” logo, and the trio of chronograph subdials. What separates the Cosmonaute from the rest of its family is its ability to tell 24-hour time. The Breitling Manufacture Caliber B02
was specifically designed for this task.

At first glance, the new Cosmonaute is a faithful reproduction of the original, made timeless with an all-black dial and black alligator strap or seven-row stainless-steel bracelet. On closer inspection, though, the elegantly proportioned 41 mm watch is packed with new features. One is its platinum bezel, a premium touch that makes this edition even more of a collector’s piece.

Another is its open sapphire crystal caseback that provides a window on the B02 movement with its special bridge engravings to mark the occasion: the words “Carpenter,” “Aurora 7,” and “3
orbits around the Earth,” along with the name of the original group of seven astronauts chosen for NASA’s first human-crewed spaceflights, Mercury 7.

While other watch brands have claims to space firsts, only Breitling can call itself the “first Swiss wristwatch in space.” The only other Swiss timepiece to have reached orbit previously was a
pocket stopwatch equipped with a strap. The Cosmonaute, meanwhile—a wristwatch worn in space and designed according to an astronaut’s specifications—was kept precisely to those specs when it became available for purchase in 1962. Not only did the 24-hour timepiece go on to become a hit amongst collectors, it was frequently spotted on other astronauts’ wrists.

Today’s Cosmonaute takes us back to the origins of space travel, when the race was on, stakes were high, and every mission was a triumph of human ingenuity. This new watch honors the
aesthetics of the original Cosmonaute, with subtle updates that work almost imperceptibly to give it its modern-retro appeal. As a final tribute, the caseback is engraved with the date of Carpenter’s
mission, “ONE OF 362,” and the phrase “First Swiss wristwatch in space.

Hoy, ese espíritu libre de las café racers de la década de 1960 regresa gracias a la nueva y espectacular colaboración Top Time entre Breitling y la marca británica de motocicletas Triumph. Ahora, en su 120.º aniversario, Triumph combina la artesanía histórica con el diseño contemporáneo para fabricar motocicletas clásicas.

El punto álgido en ambos relojes es su esfera en azul hielo. Este extraordinario color maneja dos referencias principales: un Triumph Thunderbird 6T azul de 1951 y un inusual Breitling Top Time azul hielo con ref. 815 de la década de 1970.

Entre sus características se incluyen una discreta correa de piel de becerro con estética de competición que resalta el esplendor de la esfera; los logotipos de Breitling y Triumph, sutilmente situados a las 12 y a las 6 horas; pulsadores de seta de gran tamaño que permiten controlar fácilmente las funciones de parada y puesta a cero del cronógrafo; y una escala de taquímetro de gran contraste que ofrece una clara legibilidad de las lecturas de velocidad. El reloj está equipado con un Calibre 23 de Breitling, que es un cronómetro con certificación COSC y reserva de marcha de aproximadamente 48 horas. Y queda otra característica más que encantará a los coleccionistas: los dorsos de las cajas están grabados con un detallado dibujo del motor bicilíndrico en paralelo Triumph.

EN 2022 SE CUMPLIRÁN 70 AÑOS DESDE QUE BREITLING CREÓ EN RELOJ NAVITIMER PARA LA ASOCIACIÓN DE PILOTOS Y PROPIETARIOS DE AERONAVES (AOPA)

Willy Breitling desarrolló en 1952 un instrumento de pulsera que iba a permitir a los pilotos realizar todos los cálculos de vuelo necesarios. Dos años más tarde, la Asociación de Pilotos y Propietarios de Aeronaves (AOPA por sus siglas en inglés) eligió este diseño como su reloj oficial. La colaboración entre ambos dio lugar a la creación de uno de los relojes más reconocidos de todos los tiempos, el Navitimer, cuya versión original lucía con orgullo a las 12 horas el logotipo de la AOPA. Hoy han anunciado conjuntamente la dotación de una nueva beca para jóvenes pilotos, la primera de varias colaboraciones futuras para conmemorar el 70 aniversario del reloj.

«Por aquél entonces ni Breitling ni la AOPA podían imaginar la importancia de esta asociación y la huella que dejaría en el mundo», dice el CEO de Breitling, Georges Kern.«Pero el resultado es un reloj que es mucho más que un reloj. Es todo un icono.»

Ambas organizaciones han anunciado hoy la Beca Breitling de Aviación, que cubrirá los costes para que un joven complete todo el curso de formación de piloto en los Estados Unidos. La fecha límite para solicitarla es el 11 de febrero de 2022.

La relación entre Breitling y la AOPA comenzó hace casi 70 años, cuando Willy Breitling desarrolló un nuevo concepto de cronógrafo para los miembros de la asociación. En aquella época, la AOPA era (y sigue siendo) el mayor club de pilotos del mundo, entre cuyas filas se cuentan casi todos los aviadores de los Estados Unidos.

Su diseño era un innovador instrumento de pulsera que permitiría a los pilotos realizar cálculos de vuelo tan avanzados como la velocidad media, la distancia recorrida, el consumo de combustible y el régimen de ascenso. Esta primer tentativa de ordenador de a bordo se consiguió incorporando en el bisel giratorio del reloj la regla de cálculo circular patentada por Breitling. El nombre «Navitimer» deriva de la ingeniosa combinación de navigation y timer(navegación y cronómetro). Cuando se presentó a los miembros de la AOPA en 1954, el reloj tuvo un éxito inmediato.

Este primer Navitimer, «completamente diseñado y fabricado según las especificaciones de la AOPA», no incluía el nombre ni el logotipo de Breitling en ninguna parte de la esfera. En su lugar estaba el logotipo de la AOPA, ocupando un lugar destacado a las 12 horas.

Durante las décadas de 1950 y 1960, el Navitimer seguiría siendo el reloj elegido por los pilotos militares y civiles. Incluso el astronauta Scott Carpenter llevó consigo al espacio en 1962 un Navitimer especialmente modificado.

Y no solo los aviadores se sintieron atraídos por la contundencia estilística y funcional del Navitimer. Cuando el reloj salió al mercado en 1955 con una versión no firmada del logotipo de la AOPA, encontró seguidores entre celebridades de la época de la talla de Miles Davis, Serge Gainsbourg y los campeones de Fórmula 1 Jim Clark y Graham Hill.

Hoy en día, las copias vintage y los homenajes de edición limitada que muestran el logotipo de la asociación se encuentran entre los ejemplares del reloj más codiciados por los coleccionistas. El que fuera «reloj oficial de la AOPA» se ha convertido en un fenómeno cultural, y esos orígenes seguirán teniendo una gran influencia en el futuro del Navitimer.
