BENTLEY AND THE MACALLAN INTRODUCE: THE MACALLAN HORIZON

  • Unique prototype of first product collaboration revealed
  • Ground-breaking horizontal vessel to hold exceptional single malt whisky
  • Six key upcycled, repurposed or ethically sourced materials unite to create a stunning, sustainable design
  • Recycled copper, reused wood, recycled aluminium and low CO2 leather crafted together by hand
  • Jointly developed between design teams at Bentley and The Macallan
  • Represents the next step in a partnership founded in sustainability
  • To be launched in Summer 2023

(Crewe and Speyside, 22 August 2022) Bentley Motors and The Macallan have today revealed the ground-breaking design of The Macallan Horizon – the first limited edition single malt whisky being created by the brand collaboration.

Reflecting the sustainability core that’s at the heart of the partnership together with a joint purpose of innovation, the prototype of The Macallan Horizon fuses traditional craftsmanship, recycled materials and an exclusive horizontal design. Created following extensive joint development between Bentley Motors and The Macallan, the prototype encapsulates a joint ambition of building a sustainable future from the rich heritage of both brands.

In homage to The Macallan’s acclaimed Six Pillars – the foundation stones of the brand that account for its distinctive single malt whiskies – The Macallan Horizon incorporates six unique upcycled, repurposed or ethically sourced materials which are integral to The Macallan and Bentley Motors.

A Harmony of Six Key Sustainable Materials

The prototype vessel that has been jointly crafted is unlike any bottle of whisky in history. The unique design defies the traditional vertical aesthetic of a whisky bottle and reflects the horizontal trajectory of a car, pushing the boundaries and the art of the possible. Accordingly, the vessel sits horizontally in a purpose-build cradle, and has no standing base.

At the centre of the design is a hand-made glass bottle with an extraordinary 180-degree twist, representing the mastery of space and time achieved by The Macallan and Bentley Motors in creating the prototype.

The vessel is then surrounded by an intricately twisted 3D structure crafted in a suite of beautiful, sustainable materials. The arms of the structure are crafted in:

  • Recycled copper from the disused, curiously small spirit stills which were located within The Macallan’s former distillery
  • Aluminium recovered from the production of the Continental GT, Flying Spur and Bentayga at Bentley’s home in Crewe, England
  • Recycled wood from both brands
  • The world’s lowest CO2 leather, locally-sourced in Scotland, and also used in the highly exclusive Bentley Mulliner Batur grand tourer unveiled yesterday

The final component will be the extraordinary single malt whisky being crafted for the release, which will also tell its own story of recycling and sustainability.

Bentley’s Product and Lifestyle Design Manager, Chris Cooke, comments:

“Our prototype for The Macallan Horizon is truly pioneering in both its design and use of materials. It’s a fusion of the sharply defined yet curvaceous Bentley design DNA, The Macallan’s innovation and recycled materials from both iconic British brands. The form of the design has allowed us to treat light as a material in itself, and the interplay between light and repurposed wood, aluminium and copper is extraordinary. In being both an object of beauty in itself and having such strong sustainability elements, it’s a representation of what’s coming next from our partnership.”

Jaume Ferras, Global Creative Director for The Macallan, comments:

“Taking inspiration from the car industry, we are showcasing our creative development of The Macallan Horizon, which is among the most ground-breaking projects we have embarked on in our 200-year history.

“Working with Bentley Motors has inspired us to see things differently. In the whisky world, everything is upright, such as our stills and our bottles. When we looked at the horizontal direction pursued by Bentley Motors as part of the automotive industry, it made us consider if and how we could adapt this format for whisky, which ultimately requires to be poured.

“I am incredibly proud of the revolutionary design we have created for The Macallan Horizon and the unique sustainable materials we are incorporating as part of our commitment to a better world. It simply would not be possible without the incomparable craftsmanship and creativity for which The Macallan and Bentley Motors are renowned, and is the embodiment of the uncompromised excellence pursued by The Macallan since 1824.”
The Macallan Horizon will launch in Summer 2023.

Bentley Motors and The Macallan launched their global brand partnership in July 2021. United by a dedication to craftsmanship, creativity, innovation and sustainability, both brands have committed to share learnings from their respective industries while continuing to pursue the uncompromised excellence for which they are renowned. The Macallan Horizon celebrates their union and their pursuit of a better future.

Crafted without compromise.
Please savour The Macallan responsibly.

Bentley Motors is the most sought-after luxury car brand in the world. The company’s headquarters in Crewe is home to all of its operations including design, R&D, engineering, Mulliner and production of the company’s five model lines: Continental GT, Continental GTC, Flying Spur, Bentayga and Bentayga EWB. The combination of fine craftsmanship, using skills that have been handed down through generations, alongside engineering expertise and cutting-edge technology is unique to UK luxury car brands such as Bentley. It is also an example of high-value British manufacturing at its best. Bentley employs around 4,000 people at Crewe.

Founded in 1824 on a plateau above the River Spey in north-east Scotland, The Macallan is renowned globally for its incomparable craftsmanship, creativity and innovation with each bottle of single malt whisky revealing its unique mastery of wood and spirit. Social and environmental sustainability is at the heart of The Macallan, and as part of its commitment to establishing a positive legacy it revealed its award-winning new Distillery in 2018. Designed by internationally acclaimed architects, the building takes inspiration from the surrounding ancient Scottish hills and is located on The Macallan’s beautiful 485-acre Estate. To this day, the single greatest influence on The Macallan’s sought after portfolio of single malts is its sherry seasoned oak casks from which its whiskies derive their distinctive flavours, aromas and natural colour.

Cobermaster Concept | James  Alexander - The lamp that tells the story of a creative young man

CONCEPT COBERMASTER

James  Alexander

LEXUS CREATES MOON MOBILITY CONCEPT SKETCH FOR LUNAR DESIGN PORTFOLIO

Joining an elite group of design industry luminaries, the luxury automaker was selected to contribute a suite of design concept drawings to Document Journal’s prestigious portfolio

For Document Journal‘s issue No. 15, the art & fashion magazine invited a selection of the culture’s most compelling architects and designers to find their inner Major Toms and imagine human life on the moon for The Lunar Design Portfolio. How shall we live? What will it look like? What will we wear? What will we drive?

ED2, the European Advanced Design Studio for Toyota and Lexus dedicated to advanced concept proposals and groundbreaking design, was selected to contribute a lunar mobility concept.  Drawing on the just-released LF-30 Future Concept vehicle, the studio created a series of 7 concepts from 5 different designers, a full lineup of space vehicles ready to tackle the lunar landscape.

When Document Journal approached us about the Lunar Design Portfolio, our team was working on the LF-30 Concept, which represents the “Lexus Electrified” futuristic vision for Lexus. The design team was already looking beyond near-term production and ahead to how advanced technology will change the way we interact with vehicles,” said Ian Cartabiano, President of ED2.  “The lunar project came at the right time, half way through the LF-30 development. It gave the team a chance to dream further out, and then apply some of the design language from the LF-30 interior to their lunar proposals.”

Zero Gravity, the concept sketch selected to appear in the print issue of the magazine, is a single rider vehicle that evolves the LF-30’s “Lexus Electrified” vision to incorporate Magnetic Levitation technology.  The design reinterprets the signature Lexus spindle grille and uses the motorcycle-style of driving to employ the new concept of Tazuna (which mean “reins” in Japanese): the fundamental human-centered philosophy.  Inspired by how a single rein can be used to achieve mutual understanding between horse and rider, the steering control provides active driving enjoyment created by the direct communication between human and machine.

Lexus Lunar, by Yung Presciutti

Lexus Lunar is a massive transport vehicle designed to explore and discover the moon safely. The vehicle is divided into two parts: the bottom consists of a platform with 6 rugged wheels to give the freedom to go wherever you want. The upper part holds the living area. The two components of the vehicle can be also divided, with the upper portion detaching to create the start of a lunar colony.

About Document Journal

Launched in 2012, Document is a unique, biannual journal of American and global culture featuring the pre-eminent voices of arts and letters. The editors scoured the globe to select the most compelling and visionary thinkers and designers to participate in the Lunar Design Project. Complementing Lexus’s revolutionary and futuristic designs, Document invited leading architects Shohei Shigematsu of OMA, Dan Wood and Amale Andaos of WORKac, Kulapat Yantrasast of wHY, and Lyondon Neri and Rossana Hu to envision the built lunar world, resulting in a thought-provoking collection of both practical and esoteric approaches; inspired by the potential enlightenment found in liberation from gravity, artist Mariko Mori submitted an ethereal original work; industrial design powerhouse frog and Nike contributed ideas for revolutionary consumer goods; leading writer and sociologist Steve Fuller, author of Humans 2.0, explored the historical, social, and philosophical implications of a lunar colony; and world-class DJ Honey Dijon created the soundscape through an exclusive playlist. Document Issue 15 also features Booker Prize-winning author Marlon James and Queen & Slim star Daniel Kaluuya in conversation on the creation of a black mythology; cultural critic Roxane Gay, women’s rights attorney Gloria Allred, and writer Siri Hustvedt on a reimagining of the law according to women; and an intimate and playful feature on groundbreaking musician King Princess in conversation with Mj Rodriguez, star of Ryan Murphy’s hit show Pose.

A few months after the opening of the newly renovated Louis Vuitton London store at the iconic Bond Street, Peter Marino once again takes charge of redesigning a flagship boutique of the Parisian Maison. Teaming up with the architectural icon Frank Gehry, together they created a new home for the luxury fashion house, in Seoul. Excited to see it?

“I’m always looking for ways to create feeling with three-dimensional materials,” he notes. “I love dance because it expresses movement as sculpture” Frank Gehry says.

With curved glass panels that stretch up toward the sky like sails, the Seoul boutique is both an evolution of the Paris building and a reflection of the architect’s deep appreciation for Asian culture.

On the location of a previously existing Louis Vuitton boutique in Seoul, South Korea’s capital, architect Frank Gehry has created a new look for the luxury brand, that enhances and celebrates its strong relationship with Korean culture. Located in the city’s Gangnam District, the architectural building is Gehry’s first creation in South Korea and also shares many resemblances with the Louis Vuitton Foundation, in Paris, who was also designed by Frank Gehry.

Along with Peter Marino‘s various spaces dedicated to retail services, the building also includes a space on the upper level that currently hosts an exclusive collection of Giacometti sculptures.

A vast triple-height entrance clad in the same white Turkish limestone as the façade immediately connects interior and exterior, while swings by the Campana Brothers for Vuitton’s Objets Nomades collection hang overhead, greeting visitors.

GENEVA INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW EXHIBITION STAND
RECEIVES INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION

For more than 110 years, bugatti has stood for exceptional vehicles, technology and design in the automobile and luxury categories. now we can add the trade fairs to this list. its stand at the 2019 international motor show in geneva has won three prestigious design awards for the french luxury car manufacturer. the stand was designed in a deliberately minimalist architectural style so as to provide sufficient space for the innovations. in the automotive brand contest – an international design competition for automobile brands – the german design council honoured bugatti’s trade fair presentation as the winner in the “architecture and events” category.

The Iconic Awards, also presented by the German Design Council, rewards the combination of different disciplines such as outstanding construction projects, innovative interior and product design and impressive communication achievements in connection with architecture. Here the jury awarded Bugatti the winning accolade in the “Event/Exhibition” category.

Another award for the unique design style of the trade fair presence in Geneva went to Bugatti as part of the German Design Award, where it was won in the category “Excellent Architecture – Fair and Exhibition”. Jury rationale: “The neutral colour scheme of the minimalist architectural style with its elegant proportions, emphasised only by luminous, clear lines, perfectly captures the design of the exclusive vehicles and exhibits.”

La Voiture Noire1 perfectly integrated into trade fair presentation

“The highlight of the Geneva Motor Show was certainly Bugatti’s “La Voiture Noire” – the most elegant and most valuable new Gran Turismo in the world. We adapted our newly designed exhibition stand to this car. On the 532 square metre stand we were able to present three vehicles for the first time, including two world firsts. We are therefore extremely pleased that these renowned juries have recognised our efforts and our concept,” says Stephan Winkelmann, President of Bugatti. “My thanks go to the entire Bugatti team for their ideas and implementation at this year’s Geneva show.”

With the “La Voiture Noire”, the Bugatti brand has once again demonstrated that it builds the world’s finest and most exclusive hyper sports cars. This two-door Gran Turismo with its sculptural design is particularly elegant thanks to the use of exposed carbon in jet black. In addition to the “La Voiture Noire” – a unique item for Bugatti enthusiasts – the Alsace-based company also presented the Chiron Sport “110 ans Bugatti2”. Bugatti celebrated its 110th anniversary with this limited edition of the hyper sports car. The anniversary model bears one of France’s best-known symbols: the tricolour “Le Bleu Blanc Rouge” – with the colours blue, white and red – adorns the bodywork and interior in several places. The third vehicle presented at the exhibition stand was the Bugatti Divo1, a hyper sports car limited to 40 units which has altered aerodynamics designed for lateral acceleration and offers extreme driving pleasure.

“We celebrated a special anniversary in 2019. With these two models we pay tribute to our long tradition and our French homeland,” explains Bugatti President Stephan Winkelmann. Next year, the trade fair presentation will be modified. But one thing will remain the same as the previous year: Bugatti enthusiasts can look forward to innovation – in an award-winning setting.
