SECOND 125th ANNIVERSARY WHISKY REVEALED

35YO Glenury Royal is second of four ‘last cask’ single malts

Gordon & MacPhail has launched the second of four commemorative whiskies to celebrate its 125^th anniversary.

With spirit hailing from a closed distillery in Stonehaven in the eastern Highlands, the 35-year-old Gordon & MacPhail 1984 from Glenury Royal is ultra-rare and comes from the last cask of the make maturing in the Gordon & MacPhail’s famous warehouse.

It joins a 1972 Coleburn whisky launched in September. The remaining two whiskies in the anniversary series are set to be revealed in November and December – each as rare and unique as the last.

No spirit has been distilled at Glenury since 1985, when it closed its doors for the final time and was demolished after a long history stretching back 160 years. Founded in 1825 by Captain James Barclay, the suffix ‘Royal’ was added due to the owner’s friendship with King William IV.

Its extreme scarcity in the market has since attracted whisky fans from across the world and it is a prized addition to any whisky connoisseur’s collection.

Gordon & MacPhail 1984 from Glenury Royal [RSP £1500*]

Just 397 bottles are available worldwide of this elegant and oily 35-year-old whisky, which was laid down on Thursday 7 June 1984 and has been fully matured in cask number 2335, a first-fill Sherry Butt.

Bottled at 49.1% ABV, the liquid itself is a rich amber in colour, with aromas of stewed fruit, cocoa powder, cinnamon, and toasted oak. On the palate, the whisky provides sweet orange peel, cherry, burnt sugar and dried fig giving way to a medium and fruity finish with notes of aniseed and sherry.

Stephen Rankin, a fourth-generation member of Gordon & MacPhail’s owning family and the company’s Director of Prestige, said: “Since 1895 Gordon & MacPhail has released single malts from over 100 distilleries, many of which are lesser-known or closed. The anniversary series is a true homage to this endeavour.”

40YO Mosstowie is third of four ‘last cask’ single malts

Gordon & MacPhail has revealed its third commemorative whisky released to mark the company’s 125^th anniversary.

And continuing the theme, the remarkably rare Gordon & MacPhail 1979 Mosstowie from Miltonduff Distillery constitutes the independent bottler’s last remaining cask from the distillery, matured with spirit from the now-removed Lomond Stills.

Located within Miltonduff Distillery in Morayshire, Mosstowie was founded in 1964 under the ownership of industry pioneer Hiram Walker – who championed the use of longer, more versatile Lomond Stills to give a variety of flavour profiles.

The stills, which produced Mosstowie’s smoky, soft spirit, operated for just 17 years before being removed in 1981 due to the longer arms of the stills being notoriously difficult to clean.

Only 164 bottles are available worldwide of this full-bodied whisky, full of sherry influences and dark chocolate notes. The 40-year-old whisky was laid down in Gordon & MacPhail’s Elgin warehouse on Thursday 13 September 1979 in cask number 20323, a refill Sherry Hogshead.

Bottled at 49.8% ABV, the whisky is dark gold in colour, with aromas of vanilla pod, butterscotch and stewed apples. On the palate, flavours of black pepper are complemented by spiced grapefruit, dark chocolate and raspberries, before giving way to a long and medium-bodied finish with hints of fresh mint leaves.

Stephen Rankin, a fourth-generation member of Gordon & MacPhail’s owning family and the company’s Director of Prestige, said: “Each of the extremely rare whiskies released to commemorate our 125^th anniversary is truly unique as they are the last cask of that particular make we have maturing in our warehouse. With no official bottling ever available of the elusive Mosstowie malt, we are particularly excited to bring this special whisky to the market.”

La colección privada de Linkwood 1956 por Gordon & MacPhail es un whisky escocés de malta verdaderamente hermoso y refinado.

El barril 20, un primer cerdo europeo de roble y jerez, se llenó durante los primeros días de 1956. El barril se guardó en el Almacén de la destilería de Linkwood No. 5 hasta que fue trasladado a nuestro bono Elgin el 18 de junio de 1968.

Madurado por un total de sesenta años, el barril se vació el 22 de junio de 2016 y cincuenta y seis decantadores se llenaron cuidadosamente. Este fue el último barril de Linkwood de la década de 1950 en nuestro inventario.

Esta malta única es una verdadera celebración de lo que Gordon y MacPhail representan: nuestra pasión por el whisky, nuestra paciencia y nuestras relaciones, forjadas durante generaciones.

NARIZ

Rico, cálido y dulce. Comienza muy suavemente con alcoholes maduros suaves que son muy atentos cuando los inhalas. La manzana al horno con pasas, sultanas, una pizca de crema anglaise y un lado de salsa de toffee se convierten en un pastel de frutas. Con el tiempo, aparecen notas de una tarta de chocolate oscuro y naranja. Y luego, un toque de miel, una miel oscura y salvaje, que madura en jarabe de arce. Más paciencia es recompensada con aromas de dátiles e higos.

PALADAR

Inicialmente encantador y suavemente cubriendo la boca. Sin embargo, cuanto más tiempo lo sostienes, más cálido se vuelve. Es de cuerpo completo, como se espera de Linkwood, con una buena acidez que lo hace salivar por más. Es dulce: la miel silvestre oscura se rocía ahora sobre el cálido strudel de manzana. Sabores de pastel de frutas entretienen a las papilas gustativas. El paladar medio es igual de suave, pero ahora hay más: ¡la tarta de chocolate a naranja oscuro vuelve a aparecer en el menú!

TERMINAR

Largo. Frutos secos, roble con un toque de cera de vela, seguido de hollín y el aroma de una vela apagada.

CON AGUA

Dos caídas cuidadosas ponen al roble a la vanguardia, tanto en la nariz como en el paladar; La dulzura se realza en un toffee de melaza. El paladar se mantiene rico y recubierto; El roble se mezcla con taninos de nuez y malta tostada, un equilibrio delicioso. Las notas de chocolate oscuro y toffee ahora están acompañadas por notas de cuero.
