Belmond introduces new open-air experiences to celebrate the reopening of its ‘Islands in Bloom’. Lapped by the Atlantic and surrounded by the Mediterranean sea – Mallorca, Madeira and Sicily offer the perfect locations for diving into the ‘Big Blue’ or an immersion into the natural world. Re-opening this month, Reid’s Palace, a Belmond hotel, Madeira, Grand Hotel Timeo, a Belmond hotel, Taormina and Villa Sant’Andrea, a Belmond hotel, Taormina Mare and La Residencia, a Belmond hotel, Mallorca offer new experiences inspired by the vivid colours, captivating flavours and secret charms of island life.

From a hike overlooking the glittering Mediterranean; to walks at first light above the clouds, discovering an artistic spirit inspired by nature and sailing with dolphins – the new open air experiences are designed to connect with the healing power of nature and to take time to inhale the perfumed scent of these botanical islands eternally in bloom.

THE BIG BLUE
Reid’s Palace introduces a sailing experience designed to create a sense of calm and total escapism. Sailing on a private yacht to Madeira’s uninhabited Desertas Islands, a wildlife haven surrounded by crystalline waters where whales and dolphins can be spotted dancing between the waves.

The unrivalled beauty of the Sicilian coastline is dotted with fishing villages where tradition and craftsmanship are passed on from generation to generation. This summer, guests staying at Villa Sant’Andrea have exclusive access to a private boat tour to the charming town of Acitrezza, where the Giovanni Rodolico, fourth-generation master boat-builder shares the secrets of his craft that have existed since 1908.

Cala Deia, Mallorca offers one of the most magical sea views if this Mediterrenean Island – guests staying at La Residencia have the opportunity to frame the blue views, with a painting masterclass in front of the ocean – capturing the magical light sparkling off the sea before stepping aboard the hotel’s private boat and fueling the artistic spirit from a different point of view.

ISLANDS IN BLOOM
Set in the balmy climate of the ‘island of eternal spring’, sub-tropical gardens envelope Reid’s Palace and overflow with exotic blooms all year round. Guests can join the hotel’s floral expert for a private workshop, learning the island secrets to cultivating botanicals from the famous ‘Bird of Paradise’, sweet smelling Lavender and Honeysuckle to vast Creeping Fig, Bananas and Pomegranate.

Those looking to uncover their more artistic side in nature can visit Sa Bassa Blanca, Mallorca, surrounded by woodland on the north coast, the contemporary Museum is the vision of artist Yannick Vu and Ben Jakober – guests of La Residencia can enjoy a private behind-the-scenes gallery tour of their most famous works, followed by a beautiful picnic set in the fragrant flower gardens with breathtaking sea views.

IMMERSION INTO NATURE
For early risers looking to capture the magic of first light, Reid’s Palace takes guests on a hike above the clouds at Pico do Arieiro, Madeira’s third highest peak. Surrounded by pine forests and birdsong, a private butler serves a breakfast of fresh pastries, succulent fruits and champagne. Or guests can hike the wild peninsula of Sao Lourenco for panoramic views of the Atlantic ocean.

At Mount Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano known for its surreal lunar landscapes, Grand Hotel Timeo has created a unique wine tasting experience to sample the Etna sparkling wine infused with aromas sweet strawberries, pistachio and prickly pear. The expedition concludes at a traditional winery on the north slope of Etna for lunch and wine tasting set among sun-splashed vineyards.

A TASTE OF ISLAND LIFE
Food of the land is celebrated with exquisite al fresco dining experiences, including picture-perfect picnics and big-sky dinner experiences celebrating seasonal, local produce.

For an added level of privacy and indulgence, guests are welcomed to step onto their balcony or patio for an intimate dinner as the sun sets. Whether the taste is for sustainable soul food, Michelin starred cuisine or simply a heaped and steaming bowl of fresh pasta – guests have a front row seat for an elaborate gastronomic experience in the comfort of their room.

While you’re ensconced in our casually luxurious 3,000-square-foot villa, you’ll never spot a neighbor. But you will be greeted with stunning views from every room. Stand in the entryway and let your eyes wander across the swimming pool to the coral reef beyond. Slip into the master suite, a soothing enclave of dark woods complemented by wide windows overlooking the ocean.

THE GLADDEN VILLA

Climb to the roof terrace to soak up the sun and bask in the panorama of aquamarine lagoons as far as the eye can see. The villa was built for two, but a second master bedroom can comfortably accommodate another couple should you decide that such dazzling beauty deserves to be shared.

THE PERFECT MIX OF ENERGY AND RELAXATION

A Gladden experience will be anything but ordinary. Dine anywhere. Casually paddle around the island while the vibrant reef entertains or call the boat captain to take you to some of the worlds best snorkeling and diving spots.

At the end of the day relax with a cocktail in hand and watch the dolphins swim by. Adventurous guests can head to the mainland where staff will arrange a variety of activities to immerse yourself in Belizian culture.

THE MENU IS YOURS TO DESIGN

Moon lit dining on our roof top terrace, romantic dinners on the beach, or pool side tapas are standard fare.

Organic produce grown in Gladdens Garden, fresh fish straight from the surrounding waters, and dishes accompanied by our curated wine collection ensure that dining reaches new heights on Gladden. Our trained in house chef Annika Kusion creates custom meals to guests tastes. Cuisine never gets boring when guests are treated to an array of visiting chefs allowing guests to sample the best of Belizian cuisine.

On Gladden the menu is inspired, creative and yours to design.

YOUR PRIVATE PLAYGROUND

Belize is home to the longest barrier reef system in the Northern and Western Hemispheres, and its stunning central section lies right in our back yard. Snorkeling merely requires a few fin kicks from the beach outside your villa, or let your island host arrange a trip to nearby Gladden Spit and the Silk Cayes Marine Reserve for some of the best scuba diving in the world. From April through June, whale sharks congregate in this protected area, offering the rare chance to swim with these gentle giants, the largest fish in the sea. Outside of the marine preserve, spear fishing and deep-sea fishing are available.

VISIT NEIGHBOURING ISLANDS

A great way to cruise and explore the inner Barrier Reef. Stop at nearby private island establishments and enjoy cold drinks and great food. Visit our friends at King Lewey’s Caye,  a small pirate themed island resort with great food and a fun atmosphere or visit the Lionfish Grill on Hatchet Caye, offering  unique and tasty menu items cooked with local produce and the freshest seafood.

EXPLORE THE MAINLAND

An easy boat ride away from Gladden Caye is Placencia Village, a palm-fringed town at the end of a 17-mile peninsula with relaxed restaurants, bars and a casino. Placencia serves as a convenient gateway to tour Belize’s rich inner terrain: jungles filled with more than 570 species of birds, towering waterfalls and ancient Mayan Ruins. The region is also home to Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the world’s only jaguar preserve. While away a day ambling in the rainforest or get your heart racing with cave tubing or zip lining. Our concierge can arrange any type of off-island excursion.

THE MOST PRIVATE ISLAND

A swirl of turquoise and aquamarine lagoons cradle Gladden, an island fringed with coral and white sand in the heart of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System. This island jewel harbors your own private sanctuary, a casually elegant villa designed for just one couple, with the all-inclusive service of a luxury resort. There is a second master suite should you wish to share Gladden with friends or family. Our staff resides unseen on the smaller island behind Gladden,  ready to respond to any request at a moment’s notice. A “privacy meter” indicates if a member of the team is on the main island for any reason, because we want our guests to feel free to be themselves. There are no other neighbors – it’s just you and the views.
