Maserati, Queen of Elegance on the frozen lake of St. Moritz

The Trident’s classics have attracted the attention of and won over the cosmopolitan public
in attendance in the Swiss region of the Engadin,
for the second I.C.E. (International Concours of Elegance) – St. Moritz

Modena, 27 February 2023 – A second appearance to replicate the success of and exceed the previous incarnation of an event now confirmed as one of the most exclusive in the world of vintage cars. The weekend was the stuff of dreams for aficionados of the highest of society dos. That was the I.C.E. St. Moritz, which brought together the international jet set, the rarest and most appealing classic cars, the most esteemed collectors, as well as so many big fans of elegance and the most iconic and impeccable style, in this prestigious Swiss venue on February 24 and 25.

When it comes to exclusive elegance, Maserati very much had to be there. The Italian luxury brand, partner of the ICE (International Concours of Elegance) – St. Moritz, took part by displaying some of its most desirable creations from the past and future. Of the unique specimens and new electric models on show, the Trident’s cars undisputedly took a starring role, to the great admiration and appreciation of the public and the jury.

The Maserati 420M/58 Eldorado – created for the second 500 Miglia in Monza, held in 1958 – was unrivalled and took victory in the Open Wheels category of single-seaters built between the ’50s and the ’70s. Cars rarely seen in public that recall the belle époque of racing, when every race was a parade that could take people’s breath away. Other specimens held in great esteem included the elegant 3500 GT Touring and the Mistral, pioneer of the Trident cars that have been embraced by the wind.

One of the members of the jury was Klaus Busse, Head of Design at Maserati and creative author of the Trident’s modern creations. The Grecale SUV made an appearance at St. Moritz in its futuristic one-off “Mission from Mars” edition, as did the unmistakable MC20 Cielo spyder, in its Fuoriserie version, alongside the latest arrival, the new GranTurismo, in the exciting Trofeo version and in its 100% electric variant, GranTurismo Folgore, the first full-electric in Maserati history.

In an itinerary on the frozen lake created ad hoc to the delight of the collectors who enthusiastically rushed there to show off their gems of motoring, the glamorous and sparkling atmosphere – full of history and modernity – once again made every single moment of the I.C.E. St. Moritz magical and extraordinary.

Modena, 10 September 2020 For Maserati, this is the start of a new Era. The Trident brand takes centre stage with revolutionary new cars, innovations and projects: for the Brand, the focus is strongly on the future.

The Maserati White Book

After the spark ignited by the Ghibli Hybrid, presented in July, the power of the Trofeo Collection launched in August, and the world première of the MC20 supercar, revealed to the world with an unprecedented event, the time has now come for a real journey into the future of Maserati in Modena, where the Brand’s tomorrow is being built, starting from its roots.

Innovation, passion and uniqueness guide the Brand in this phase of total renewal.

The starting-point for this journey is the historic plant on Viale Ciro Menotti in Modena. The Modena plant, where the Trident has had its home for over 80 years, is a magical location that combines the Brand’s “made in Italy” DNA and its Heritage with an irrepressible drive towards the future and innovation: the plant has been modernised with new production, engine assembly and painting facilities specifically for the new MC20.

In fact the Nettuno, the supercar’s ground-breaking V6 power unit, is the first creation of the Maserati Engine Lab, the new engine hub recently created within the Modena site, which has also, for the first time in its history, been equipped with a state-of-the-art, environment-friendly paintshop.

MC20 is the first step in the new Era, the first model that marks out a new path to the future. The supercar’s strikingly elegant design is achieved by finely balancing a series of opposites: a blend of craftsmanship and engineering, elegance and performance, racing spirit and pleasure at the wheel. Designed by the Maserati Style Centre in Turin, MC20 is 100% developed, engineered and produced in Modena, and began to take shape in the laboratories of the Maserati Innovation Lab, the Trident brand’s engineering hub, a facility of excellence where all the Maserati models of today and tomorrow are brought to life.

In the Maserati Innovation Lab in Modena, digital processes support the product’s development, applying the exclusive Maserati formula which adopts an integrated approach to prioritise the human factor right from the initial phases: customer-focus is incorporated in the world of virtual simulation with an exclusive hardware-software mix. In fact, more than 90% of the MC20’s vehicle dynamics were developed with the aid of virtual models, using an innovative approach called Virtual Vehicle Dynamics Development, managed by Maserati in-house.

The Maserati Innovation Lab is therefore the perfect location for discussing the Brand’s tomorrow, and its laboratories will bring forth the Folgore and the new Grecale SUV.

Folgore is the new strategy for electrification the Maserati way, and ignites the flame of a new energy. An energy that will project the Trident into the future.

The new Maserati GranTurismo and GranCabrio will be the Brand’s first cars to adopt 100% electric solutions; they will be engineered in Modena and built at the Turin production hub. There will also be an electric version of the MC20, to be produced at the Maserati plant in Modena.

The first step in the range’s electrification is Ghibli Hybrid, launched in July. The challenge facing Maserati was to enter the world of electrification without betraying the Brand’s core philosophy and values. The result? The creation of the best possible hybrid. Keeping faith with its DNA, Maserati has chosen a hybrid solution focused primarily on improving performance, while also saving fuel and cutting emissions.

The future Maserati SUV will carry the name of a wind. It is to be called Grecale, after the fierce north-east wind of the Mediterranean Sea, and it is destined to play a key role in the Brand’s development.

Maserati has a long-standing practice of naming its cars after the world’s most famous winds.

It all began in 1963, with the legendary Mistral. This was followed by Ghibli, Bora, Merak and Khamsin. And in 2016 by Levante, the first SUV in Maserati’s history.

The Brand’s new era also embraces the customisation of its cars. Thanks to the new Maserati FUORISERIE programme, it will now be possible to customise every Maserati to the customer’s taste, and every purchaser is offered the opportunity of a unique experience in the new “car tailoring” shop, to be created at the Modena headquarters. To help customers to find their way around the thousands of possible combinations, we have created three basic collections as starting-points, three collections – called Corse, Unica and Futura – that express the brand’s power and represent its values, uniting breath-taking performance with elegance and innovation.

In its drive towards the future, the Brand proudly maintains its links with its DNA; Maserati starts from Modena, from the heart of Italy’s Motor Valley, the epicentre of passion, performance and audacity, and also gives due prominence to the wonderful cars from its past through the dedicated services in the new Classiche programme.

In addition, to mark the opening of the Brand’s new Era and the significant “MMXX: Time to be Audacious” event, the spotlight goes up on the global mobility stage and Maserati strengthens its bond with its home city: Modena has been chosen for the presentation to the world of the latest addition to the family, the MC20, and one of the cars is displayed on Piazza Grande, below the Ghirlandina tower. What’s more, Piazza Roma hosts the Trofeo Collection: the most extreme, powerful trims of Levante, Ghibli and Quattroporte.

Trofeo Collection is now complete. After the launch in 2018 of Levante Trofeo, the SUV’s most extreme, most powerful version, the new Quattroporte and Ghibli Trofeo with the new 580 hp V8 engine are now available, achieving the pinnacle of performance, sportiness and luxury and making them the most powerful Maserati sedans ever.

Also during the event, the Anatomical Theatre in Modena is the location for an “anatomy session” in which Nettuno, the new Modena-made engine, can be viewed opened up and dissected, an opportunity to examine the characteristics of a technological gem down to the tiniest detail.

Maserati MC20

Modena, September 9th2020 – Maserati enters the new Era with MC20, the new super sports car that combines performance, sportiness and luxury in the unique Maserati style. MC20 was presented to the world in Modena on 9 September during the “MMXX: Time to be audacious” event.

Maserati MC20: the Brand’s new super sports car

  • MC20 marks the beginning of Maserati’s new Era
  • The new Maserati super sports car is a worthy successor to the MC12
  • A car with a racing DNA
  • 100% Made in Modena and 100% Made in Italy

The new MC20 (MC for Maserati Corse and 20 for 2020, the year of its world première and the start of the Brand’s new Era) is the Maserati everyone was waiting for. It is a car with incredible aerodynamic efficiency, which conceals a sporty soul, with the new Nettuno engine, a 630 horsepower V6 with torque of 730 Nm that delivers 0-100 km/h acceleration in under 2,9 seconds and a top speed over 325 km an hour. An engine that signals Maserati’s return to producing its own power units after a hiatus of more than 20 years.

The MC20 is an extremely lightweight car under 1,500 kg (kerb weight), and thanks to its power output of 630 hp it comes out best in class in weight/power ratio, at just 2.33 kg/hp. This record is achieved through the use of choice quality materials, exploiting all the potentials of carbon fibre without any sacrifices with regard to comfort.

Nettuno, the first engine in this new chapter of the Trident’s history, is the MC20’s twin turbo V6, a technologic gem already awarded an international patent, which puts the MTC (Maserati Twin Combustion) technology, the ground-breaking combustion system developed in-house, onto the world’s roads.

Overall, this revolutionary project has resulted in a car that epitomises Italian excellence. In fact, MC20 was designed in Modena and will be built at the Viale Ciro Menotti plant, where the Trident’s models have been built for more than 80 years. The new production line, created in the spaces where the GranTurismo and GranCabrio models were assembled until November 2019, is now ready for action in the historic plant. The site also features a new paintshop incorporating innovative, environment-friendly technologies. Nettuno will also be built in Modena, at the newly established Maserati Engine Lab.

The MC20 design was produced in about 24 months, with the involvement from the outset, in an innovative approach, of a team of Maserati Innovation Lab engineers, technical specialists from the Maserati Engine Lab and designers from the Maserati Style Centre.

The Virtual Vehicle Dynamics Development system, which includes the use of one of the world’s most advanced dynamic simulators, was developed in-house by the Maserati Innovation Lab and is based on a complex mathematical model called Virtual Car. This method allowed performance of 97% of dynamic tests, optimising development times. The car was then fine-tuned in the best Maserati tradition with exhaustive track and road test-driving sessions in the most widely varying conditions of use.

The guiding theme of the MC20’S design was the Brand’s historic identity, with all the elegance, performance and comfort integral to its genetic make-up. The focus on performance led to the conception of a car with a distinct personality, with unmistakable forms that render it unique.

The butterfly doors are not only stunningly beautiful but also functional, as they improve the car’s ergonomics and enable optimal access to and from the cabin.

The aerodynamics were designed through over two thousand man-hours in the Dallara Wind Tunnel and more than a thousand CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations, which enabled the creation of a genuine work of art. The resulting car has a sleek line, with no mobile appendages but just a discreet rear spoiler that improves downforce without detracting from the MC20’s beauty. The CX is more under 0,38.

Maserati MC20

Maserati MC20

The MC20 is designed to enable coupé and convertible versions and for full electric power.

Once inside the cabin, the driver is always central, and nothing must distract them from the sporting driving experience. Every component has a purpose, and is completely driver-oriented. Simple forms, very few sharp edges and minimal distractions. Two 10 inch screens: one for the cockpit and the other for the Maserati Touch Control Plus (MTC Plus MIA). Simplicity is also the keynote of the carbon fibre-clad central console, with just a few features: the wireless smartphone charger, the driving mode selector (GT, Wet, Sport, Corsa and a fifth, ESC Off, which deactivates the control functions), two speed selection buttons, the power window controls, the Multimedia System controls, and a handy storage compartment underneath the armrest. All the other controls are on the steering wheel, with the ignition button on the left and the launch control on the right.

The new MC20 will be connected at all times with the Maserati Connect program. The full range of services includes connected navigation, Alexa and Wifi Hotspot and can also be managed through the Maserati Connect smartphone or smartwatch App.

For the launch, Maserati has also developed six new colours to characterise MC20: Bianco Audace, Giallo Genio, Rosso Vincente, Blu Infinito, Nero Enigma and Grigio Mistero. Each of them has been conceived, designed and developed exclusively for this car and they all convey important themes: a strong reference to Made in Italy, to Italian identity and to the land, as well as one linked to Maserati tradition.

Both visually and conceptually, there are strong references to the MC12, the car that marked Maserati’s racing comeback in 2004. In the same way as its predecessor, MC20, with its explicitly racing soul clear from its name alone, announces the intention to return to the world of racing.

The production launch is scheduled for the end the current year with orders to be accepted from the 9th September after the world Première.

Maserati celebrates the 60th anniversary of the launch  of the 5000 GT 2+2 coupé at the Turin Motor Show

Modena, 29 November 2019 – Sixty years ago, the 5000 GT, a 2+2 coupé, was presented at the Turin Motor Show and was the undisputed star of the event.

Reza Pahlavi, the then Shah of Persia, and a great enthusiast of high-performance sports cars, test-drove a 3500 GT towards the end of 1958 and was delighted with it. However, he requested an increase in performance, and Giulio Alfieri, Maserati technical director at the time, realised that the car would have to be completely redesigned to satisfy this prestige customer’s demands.

The resulting AM103 project, continued through during 1959, and was in effect a new car and not merely a customisation: the heart of the design was the V8 engine of the 450S (the famous Maserati racing barchetta), with its bore increased to upgrade its displacement to almost five litres.

The 5000 GT, a prestigious  2+2 coupé, was born.

The car, of which the first bodywork was built by Carrozzeria Touring, was launched at the 1959 Turin Motor Show, and received the nickname “Shah of Persia” in honour of this unique customer. Only three of that special version were ever produced.

The next year, in 1960, the 5000 GT was exhibited on the stand at the Geneva International Motor Show, with a few revisions to the engine.

El hecho más interesante del Maserati 5000 GT fue que fue construido con carrocería por casi todos los principales autocares italianos de la época: de Allemano, Pininfarina, Monterosa, Ghia, Bertone y Frua, sin mencionar Michelotti para Vignale.
