The Report features a foreword by environmentalist and supermodel Gisele Bündchen, IWC’s newly appointed Environmental & Community Projects Advisor. A SHARED PURPOSE: PARTNERING WITH GISELE BÜNDCHEN

IWC welcomes environmentalist and supermodel Gisele Bündchen as the brand’s first ever Environmental & Community Projects Advisor. Since 2009, Gisele has served as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environmental Program, engaging with causes that advocate for biodiversity and wildlife. She will also support the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer identifying initiatives to work on in the future.

Commenting on the partnership with IWC, Gisele stated: “I’m excited to partner with IWC on our shared purpose of protecting our planet. I look forward to working together with IWC to help leave a better future for generations to come.”

PROGRESS ON IWC’S 2022 SUSTAINABILITY TARGETS

IWC began their sustainability journey over a decade ago and the precision, passion and persistence that goes into their watchmaking helps drive their sustainability efforts. Watches produced by IWC are sustainable by default, cherished and handed down to the next generation. In 2020, the Company set nine targets to accomplish by 2022. Despite the pandemic, they have achieved many of their goals and made considerable strides in others.

  • Achieved RJC’s Chain of Custody (CoC)certification of watch components: a voluntary standard that certifies that the gold and platinum used in their supply chain are traceable and responsibly sourced;
  • Switched to purchasing 100% renewable energy globally;
  • Maintained a ‘Great Place to Work®’ certification;
  • Achieved EQUAL-SALARY certification in Switzerland;
  • Developed and piloted a blueprint for sustainable events.
  • Developed and implemented a more sustainable IT strategy, focusing on our hardware.

IWC are on track to achieve the following by the end of 2022:

  • Phase out the purchase of non-FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified forestry products (e.g. paper, cardboard, wood, furniture);
  • Double IWC’s annual corporate volunteering hours compared to a 2020 baseline;
  • Double the number of women in managerial positions compared to a 2017 baseline.

In other key developments since 2020, IWC:

  • Launched TimberTex™ straps in 2021: produced in Italy, these straps use 80% plant-based fibres- sustainably sourced from European forests;
  • Eliminated single-use plastics at their headquarters and boutiques; and
  • Continued to partner with organisations around the world, such as Laureus Sport for Good and Save the Children, to drive societal change.

“We continue to move ahead in our sustainability journey, always questioning what more we can do in material innovation, energy use and societal impact to be even more sustainable. We keenly understand our responsibility to reduce our impact on the environment, to work towards a more equitable society and to show that luxury does not need to mean excess. Nor be excessive.”

Franziska Gsell, CMO of IWC Schaffhausen

INTRODUCING MIRATEX™,  A BREAKTHROUGH PLANT-BASED ALTERNATIVE TO LEATHER

Following the introduction of paper-based TimberTex straps in 2021, IWC is proud to announce the launch of its revolutionary MiraTex™ straps, a first for the market. IWC’s MiraTex™ straps are made with MIRUM®, a biobased, plastic-free, circular material that meets IWC’s rigorous standards of durability, flexibility and aesthetic beauty.

A portmanteau combining miracle and textile, MiraTex™ was engineered in close collaboration with Natural Fiber Welding (NFW), a material innovation company. Composed of plants and minerals including FSC certified natural rubber, fillers including cork powder and mineral colorants, NFW’s MIRUM® does not contain any petrochemicals or plastic. Eliminating the tanning process, MIRUM® is much less resource-intensive to produce than animal and synthetic leather, thereby giving it a low carbon footprint. MIRUM® is also 100% recyclable and circular.

For more information about IWC’s MiraTex™ straps, please consult the backgrounder “MiraTex™: a Sustainable and Circular Innovation”.

A NEW PURPOSE: ‘ENGINEERING BEYOND TIME ’

The IWC 2022 Sustainability Report is part of the Company’s continued efforts to being fully transparent about the progress towards their sustainability goals.

Consult the IWC 2022 Sustainability Report here: https://www.iwc.com/en/company/sustainability-at-iwc.html

“Sustainability permeates our entire business – at all divisions, at all levels. It drives us to think smarter, to innovate and to take advantage of the opportunities that being a more responsible company creates. This sustainability report demonstrates our commitment to being transparent and sustainable. Unapologetically and without exceptions,”

Christoph Grainger-Herr, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen

To further increase transparency and regularly engage stakeholders in their journey, IWC has announced an annual rather than biannual cadence for the Report. This year’s edition provides an update on IWC’s ongoing sustainability journey, based on a new purpose, ‘Engineering beyond time’, upheld by the pillars of Transparency, Responsibility and Circularity.

TRANSPARENCY – Engineering beyond perception

This pillar demonstrates IWC’s belief that an open and honest dialogue with all stakeholders enables the company to see where they stand, where they can improve and which goals they need to set to continue their journey. This is supported by their commitment to annual reporting, partnerships with credible companies and associations, and adhering to recognised international standards.

CIRCULARITY – Engineering beyond precision

This pillar displays the longevity of IWC’s timepieces, which are timeless in style and function and are handed down through the generations. IWC maintains each and every watch made in Schaffhausen for as long as someone enjoys wearing it. This is underscored by their commitment to the lifetime servicing of their watches even for vintage pieces, use of recycled steel and gold, and re-usability of their products and packaging.

RESPONSIBILITY – Engineering beyond sustainability

This pillar reflects the fact that IWC creates a product that is perpetual by nature. Manufacturing their watches as responsibly as possible inspires them to exceed and pursue even more ambitious goals. This is underpinned by the company’s commitment to traceable sourcing, carbon footprint reduction and investment in biodiversity projects.

Finally, the Report is now lighter and more engaging, a departure from the previous 60-page document to an easy-to-read magazine. The Report uses storytelling as well as clear and straightforward language to invite readers into IWC’s sustainability journey. IWC’s Sustainability Report is prepared with reference to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards.*

A NEW PURPOSE: ‘ENGINEERING BEYOND TIME ’

The IWC 2022 Sustainability Report is part of the Company’s continued efforts to being fully transparent about the progress towards their sustainability goals.

  • Logró la certificación de Cadena de Custodia (CoC) de RJC para componentes de relojes: un estándar voluntario que certifica que el oro y el platino utilizados en su cadena de suministro son rastreables y de origen responsable;
  • Cambió a comprar energía 100% renovable a nivel mundial;
  • Mantuvo una certificación ‘Great Place to Work®’;
  • Logró la certificación EQUAL-SALARY en Suiza;
  • Desarrolló y puso a prueba un plan para eventos sostenibles.
  • Desarrollé e implementé una estrategia de TI más sostenible, enfocándome en nuestro hardware.

IWC está en camino de lograr lo siguiente para fines de 2022:

  • Eliminar gradualmente la compra de productos forestales no certificados por el FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) (por ejemplo, papel, cartón, madera, muebles);
  • Duplicar las horas anuales de voluntariado corporativo de IWC en comparación con la referencia de 2020;
  • Duplicar el número de mujeres en puestos directivos en comparación con la línea de base de 2017.

En otros desarrollos clave desde 2020, IWC:

  • Lanzamiento de las correas TimberTex™ en 2021: fabricadas en Italia, estas correas utilizan un 80 % de fibras de origen vegetal, obtenidas de forma sostenible de bosques europeos;

  • Switched to purchasing 100% renewable energy globally;
  • Maintained a ‘Great Place to Work®’ certification;
  • Achieved EQUAL-SALARY certification in Switzerland;
  • Developed and piloted a blueprint for sustainable events.
  • Developed and implemented a more sustainable IT strategy, focusing on our hardware.

IWC are on track to achieve the following by the end of 2022:

  • Phase out the purchase of non-FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified forestry products (e.g. paper, cardboard, wood, furniture);
  • Double IWC’s annual corporate volunteering hours compared to a 2020 baseline;
  • Double the number of women in managerial positions compared to a 2017 baseline.

In other key developments since 2020, IWC:

  • Launched TimberTex™ straps in 2021: produced in Italy, these straps use 80% plant-based fibres- sustainably sourced from European forests;

  • Achieved RJC’s Chain of Custody (CoC)certification of watch components: a voluntary standard that certifies that the gold and platinum used in their supply chain are traceable and responsibly sourced;
  • Switched to purchasing 100% renewable energy globally;
  • Maintained a ‘Great Place to Work®’ certification;
  • Achieved EQUAL-SALARY certification in Switzerland;
  • Developed and piloted a blueprint for sustainable events.
  • Developed and implemented a more sustainable IT strategy, focusing on our hardware.

IWC are on track to achieve the following by the end of 2022:

  • Phase out the purchase of non-FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified forestry products (e.g. paper, cardboard, wood, furniture);
  • Double IWC’s annual corporate volunteering hours compared to a 2020 baseline;
  • Double the number of women in managerial positions compared to a 2017 baseline.

In other key developments since 2020, IWC:

  • Launched TimberTex™ straps in 2021: produced in Italy, these straps use 80% plant-based fibres- sustainably sourced from European forests;

Greubel Forsey | Art of Invention – Double Balancier Convexe: A-Sculpture of Time

The foundations are laid and development continues. After unveiling its Balancier Convexe S2, Greubel Forsey continues to establish its new and assertive identity. The Double Balancier Convexe
is its latest expression.

FIFTEEN YEARS IN
THE MAKING

With every invention, Greubel Forsey has added a significant milestone to the history of watchmaking. The Double Balancier, patented in 2007, is one of them. It was first demonstrated in an
EWT (Experimental Watch Technology) prototype, with two superimposed regulating organs inclined at 20°. A second iteration followed soon after, this time in a six piece unique edition with the
two regulating organs positioned in different three-dimensional planes and inclined at 35°.

Finally, in 2016, Greubel Forsey presented the invention in its current, double-patented form: the two balance wheels are dissociated, inclined at 30° and separated by a constant spherical differential which calculates their average timing rate.

TOWARDS A NEW
ÆSTHETIC HORIZON

Today, Greubel Forsey unveils a new timepiece emphasizing the architectural dimension of its 6th invention that is the Double Balancier. The three regulating organs (two balance wheels, one differential) occupy more than half of the dial and provide unprecedented depth. The timepiece is contrasting, highly technical and more
contemporary than ever.

Double Balancier Convexe

AN ARCHITECTURAL
MARVEL

The timepiece gets its name from the convex profile of its 43.5 mm titanium case. It’s plunging lines that hug the curve of the wrist raised significant technical challenges, requiring the
sapphire crystal and above all the movement to adopt to this unique shape.

This new composition showcases its movement spectacularly. The gear train emerges from below the surface of the seemingly semicircular black-treated titanium bridge and extends into
the hour and minute hands which tower above it.

The semicircle itself is rendered asymmetrical by an opening for the barrel cover, central hours and minutes indication, and by an opening which provides space for the small seconds indication below it. The engraved and lacquered minute indexes are nested within the three-dimensional chapter ring, but the polished hour indexes surpass it, plunging deep into the movement.

Double Balancier Convexe

Each hand has its own geometry, finish and color, depending on the role assigned to it. The hour and minute hands take on a curved profile and are filled with Super-Luminova, complementing that of the hour indexes. The small seconds and 4-minute hand indicating the rotational speed of the spherical differential are in polished blued steel while the power reserve is indicated by a polished and openworked hand with a red tip.

A MARVEL OF
HAND FINISHING

In the lower half of the Double Balancier Convexe, each regulating organ is sculpted individually. The two balance wheels, although identical in shape and function, occupy different planes and thus offer a complementary spectacle. The center bridge is in itself a showcase of the creative excellence of Greubel Forsey: multi-level, openworked and black polished with several
interior angles, it carries the hour and minute hands above the movement. The inclined escapement platforms are straight-grained with handpolished beveling and countersinks, while the
differential bridge and balance wheel bridges are flat black polished with further hand-polished beveling.

Every single component is hand finished to Greubel Forsey criteria and thus stands out on its own, and at the same time it contributes to the striking overall æsthetic of this timepiece.

Double Balancier Convexe

A MARVEL OF
CONTEMPORARY DESIGN

The bridges and mainplate of the Double Balancier Convexe are in frosted and black treated titanium. A new font has been adopted for the power reserve and different elements throughout this timepiece. On the barrel cover, we discover relief-engraved text, circular-grained with polished chamfer, describing the properties of the two coaxial barrels in series with rapid rotation (one revolution in 3.2 hours). They drive a 374-part movement, endowed with a 72-hour chronometric power reserve materialized by an openworked hand.

The integrated and profiled lugs reinforce the compact and ergonomic character of this timepiece. They extend onto either a textured rubber strap or titanium bracelet. Last particularity: the
Double Balancier Convexe, like most of the contemporary creations of the Atelier, is now water resistant to 100 meters – a detail that does not mislead on its vocation to be worn daily, in all circumstances.

https://www.hublot.com/ – Big Bang Tourbillon Samuel Ross

A Hublot ambassador since 2020, creative director Samuel Ross brings his unique graphic language to watchmaking for the first time with the limited-edition Big Bang Tourbillon Samuel Ross.

https://www.hublot.com/

A 40-year focus on the “Art of Fusion” has resulted in a meteoric rise for Hublot, seeing it catapulted to the pinnacle of innovative watchmaking. With the brand’s ability to combine seemingly diametrically opposed materials, plus an enduring drive to push the boundaries of what is technically and aesthetically possible, it has rewritten the rules of horology, leaving a new design language in its wake.

Fostering a desire to work with the most talented practitioners in alternate fields, the brand introduced its “Hublot Loves Art” initiative more than a decade ago. Hublot has since collaborated with some of the most talented artists and designers of a generation. Ground-breaking in outlook and highly collectable, the resulting watches offer new interpretations of time and timekeeping. The most recent creator to take up the mantle is Samuel Ross.

Mirroring Hublot’s trajectory, renaissance man Ross has experienced an equally breakneck rise to prominence. Describing himself as a creative director, the 30-year-old multi-disciplinary artist, filmmaker, and fashion designer graduated from Leicester De Montfort University in 2012 with a first-class honours’ degree in graphic design and illustration. Since then, he has collaborated with many brands and creative outlets – from Oakley and Nike to Dr. Martens and Mackintosh – launching his men’s Luxury Sportswear label A-Cold-Wall* in late 2015, and his design studio SR_A in 2019.

In 2019, Ross was awarded the prestigious Hublot Design Prize, and a year later he was announced as an official brand ambassador, an occasion marked by the unveiling of REFORM, a sculpture designed to encapsulate 40 years of Hublot. Combining an ancient, organic material (granite) with a modern, manmade one (steel), Ross created his own ‘Fusion’, uniting past and present in a production process that involved both traditional hand-finishing and cutting-edge machining.

The deceptively simple, industrial form of the 40cm high artwork has now been reinterpreted in the 44mm Big Bang Tourbillon Samuel Ross – Ross’s first wristwatch collaboration with Hublot. Ross’s signature use of colour and love of stark geometry and urban design, come together with the innovation and precision that prevail in the work of both Ross and Hublot.

The distinctive, stylised hexagon of the Big Bang case is reflected in the titanium honeycomb mesh used on the sapphire dial, case, case back and strap. A basic building block of nature (seen in environments from beehives and snake’s scales to pineapple skin and snowflakes) the robust and efficient shape, that can be repeated without gaps or overlapping, has been appropriated as a standard for modern-day construction and design thanks to the seamless fit of each unit.

Here the hexagon is a visual symbol of the functionality of the watch – a key strand running through all of Ross’s design. Although it may be a wearable sculpture, Ross never loses sight of the need for it to be durable and ergonomic, the lightweight, openworked titanium structure and malleable rubber strap ensuring its comfort on the wrist. A proponent of colour theory, Ross has chosen orange – representing energy and optimism – for the strap and accents on the crown and tourbillon bridge and lateral bumpers that protect the case, a glowing contrast to the sober grey of the satin-finished case and bezel.

The 282-component, manufacture HUB6035 calibre within beats at 3 Hz and gives 72 hours of power reserve. Just 50 pieces will be produced, each one a piece of art that brings a new perspective and a new visual language

to watchmaking. To celebrate the launch, Ross’s signature colours will envelop Hublot’s 5th Ave boutique in New York City. The takeover will be repeated in Hublot stores across the globe, bringing the Samuel Ross universe to the world of horology.
