A Hublot ambassador since 2020, creative director Samuel Ross brings his unique graphic language to watchmaking for the first time with the limited-edition Big Bang Tourbillon Samuel Ross.

A 40-year focus on the “Art of Fusion” has resulted in a meteoric rise for Hublot, seeing it catapulted to the pinnacle of innovative watchmaking. With the brand’s ability to combine seemingly diametrically opposed materials, plus an enduring drive to push the boundaries of what is technically and aesthetically possible, it has rewritten the rules of horology, leaving a new design language in its wake.

Fostering a desire to work with the most talented practitioners in alternate fields, the brand introduced its “Hublot Loves Art” initiative more than a decade ago. Hublot has since collaborated with some of the most talented artists and designers of a generation. Ground-breaking in outlook and highly collectable, the resulting watches offer new interpretations of time and timekeeping. The most recent creator to take up the mantle is Samuel Ross.

Mirroring Hublot’s trajectory, renaissance man Ross has experienced an equally breakneck rise to prominence. Describing himself as a creative director, the 30-year-old multi-disciplinary artist, filmmaker, and fashion designer graduated from Leicester De Montfort University in 2012 with a first-class honours’ degree in graphic design and illustration. Since then, he has collaborated with many brands and creative outlets – from Oakley and Nike to Dr. Martens and Mackintosh – launching his men’s Luxury Sportswear label A-Cold-Wall* in late 2015, and his design studio SR_A in 2019.

In 2019, Ross was awarded the prestigious Hublot Design Prize, and a year later he was announced as an official brand ambassador, an occasion marked by the unveiling of REFORM, a sculpture designed to encapsulate 40 years of Hublot. Combining an ancient, organic material (granite) with a modern, manmade one (steel), Ross created his own ‘Fusion’, uniting past and present in a production process that involved both traditional hand-finishing and cutting-edge machining.

The deceptively simple, industrial form of the 40cm high artwork has now been reinterpreted in the 44mm Big Bang Tourbillon Samuel Ross – Ross’s first wristwatch collaboration with Hublot. Ross’s signature use of colour and love of stark geometry and urban design, come together with the innovation and precision that prevail in the work of both Ross and Hublot.

The distinctive, stylised hexagon of the Big Bang case is reflected in the titanium honeycomb mesh used on the sapphire dial, case, case back and strap. A basic building block of nature (seen in environments from beehives and snake’s scales to pineapple skin and snowflakes) the robust and efficient shape, that can be repeated without gaps or overlapping, has been appropriated as a standard for modern-day construction and design thanks to the seamless fit of each unit.

Here the hexagon is a visual symbol of the functionality of the watch – a key strand running through all of Ross’s design. Although it may be a wearable sculpture, Ross never loses sight of the need for it to be durable and ergonomic, the lightweight, openworked titanium structure and malleable rubber strap ensuring its comfort on the wrist. A proponent of colour theory, Ross has chosen orange – representing energy and optimism – for the strap and accents on the crown and tourbillon bridge and lateral bumpers that protect the case, a glowing contrast to the sober grey of the satin-finished case and bezel.

The 282-component, manufacture HUB6035 calibre within beats at 3 Hz and gives 72 hours of power reserve. Just 50 pieces will be produced, each one a piece of art that brings a new perspective and a new visual language

to watchmaking. To celebrate the launch, Ross’s signature colours will envelop Hublot’s 5th Ave boutique in New York City. The takeover will be repeated in Hublot stores across the globe, bringing the Samuel Ross universe to the world of horology.

INTERIORS

Roll is caused by centrifugal forces and “uneven” track surfaces.) – (Pitch – The angle between the car’s body and a transverse axis. Pitch is caused by the car’s acceleration or deceleration. It is most noticeable under heavy braking, with the car tending to angle forward.

Billet 7 axis point milled X design billet Tennalumsuper alloy Ultra-strength – Ultimate alloy (683Mpa yield strength), has the highest mechanical strength of all commercially available aluminum alloys (2.5 times stronger than 6061, and 35% stronger than 7075) and exceeds that of many steels. In fact, its yield strength is approaching that of pre-hardened (HRC 26-32) 41XX and 400 series stainless steels but at a third of the weight. In strength-to-weight ratio, Tennalum out performs nearly all other engineering alloys in existence (33% better strength-to-weight performance than 7075, and 28% better performance than 6Al-4V Grade 5 Titanium)

Sinker EDM technique uses an energized shaped electrode in a submerged bath of dielectric fluid to machine conductive metals and offers an efficient manufacturing method to produce complex part details that are difficult to machine by other methods, like 5 axis machines etc. Sinker spark erosion machines are fitted with an Intelligent Speed Power Generator (ISPG) which, using patented technologies, establishes new standards in surface quality, material removal and accuracy of form. Electrode wear is reduced in all machining operations, from roughing to finishing, with copper or graphite electrodes. Productivity shows an average increase of 30 percent, and can even reach 100 percent for pre-milled forms. Even in the presence of deep, narrow cavities, with poor flushing conditions, a 50 percent increase in erosion speed can be obtained with no increase in electrode wear. It appears that the more complex the piston design is, the more high quality of surface.

AERODYNAMICS

Particular emphasis has been placed on the study and design of aerodynamics, as they are two factors on which we have relied for the construction of the entire car, making it currently the best vehicle after the F1.

At speeds over 500km on track conditions, in order to achieve the ultimate turning time, everything must be perfectly designed and we must exhaust all room for improvement.

The front spoiler gives total downforce 2.780 N and total Drag 408 N and Aerodynamic efficiency: Ci / Cd = 6,813, numbers and proportions that can be found only in F1 cars.

The floor is also innovatively designed, in order to take advantage of the Venturi effect, i.e the difference in pressure and speed of the upper part of the car with the lower one and to minimize the lifting of the car and push it to the ground with greater force in combination with the large diffuser.

The vertical fins under the floor help keep the laminar airflow (air flowing in a smooth path) out the back of the vehicle, without these vertical fins the air can become turbulent (airflow crossing directions). Laminar airflow increases efficiency as turbulent air decreases efficiency by creating drag.

As for the front surface and the way the air is transferred from the front to the back, the design helps so that the air hugs the vehicle and passes almost all through the front of the wings, around the monocoque and comes out into the back airways with a tendency to push the car to the ground. The rear air ducts have airflow Volume / 16.990m3 / HR and are capable of supplying horsepower over 3.000 horsepower.

The GMT Quadruple Tourbillon had only one chapter. Today, Greubel Forsey writes the second and reveals an 11 piece edition of this groundbreaking timepiece in Titanium.

With new materials, new colours and new finishes, this revolutionary and modern limited edition launches the GMT Quadruple Tourbillon towards unexplored horizons and resolutely marks the dawn of a new chapter.

A HOROLOGICAL BREAKTHROUGH

The GMT Quadruple Tourbillon is radical in all its aspects. First of all, by its construction. The Quadruple Tourbillon is Greubel Forsey’s second Fundamental Invention, The mission: to average
out positional errors due to gravity in all situations, especially in stable wristwatch positions. To achieve this, the original tourbillon has been elevated to realise its full potential: inclined at 30°, doubled and then quadrupled. The result, two synchronised Double Tourbillon 30° mechanisms, where a first cage, inclined at 30° and rotating in one minute, is nested within a second horizontal cage, completing a full rotation in four minutes. A spherical differential transmits the average timing rate of the four tourbillon cages, improving the overall chronometric performance of all the regulating organs.

A TOTALLY NEW EXPERIENCE ON THE WRIST

The GMT Quadruple Tourbillon is radical by design. With this exclusive limited edition in titanium with striking blue accents, Greubel Forsey offers an unexpected alternative to the precious metals that High-end watchmaking traditionally favours. Titanium has numerous qualities: it is both stronger and lighter than steel, while also being extremely resistant to corrosion and magnetic fields.

With a reduction of over a third of its weight, the new titanium case offers a brand new, modern and dynamic feel on the wrist, which has inspired the choice of the new rubber strap, in order to assert this new contemporary identity.

HAND FINISHING PAR EXCELLENCE

The toughness of titanium, which defines the 46.5mm case of the GMT Quadruple Tourbillon, presents a significant machining and hand finishing challenge for the components made from it, such as the GMT pusher or the folding clasp or the crown. In addition, new hand finishing details have been specially created for this timepiece.

The circular-grained hour ring with polished bevels and 72-hour chronometric power reserve indication appear for the first time in a brilliant blue. The mainplate is now frosted and spotted
with polished bevelling, countersinks and straight-grained flanks, executed in a grey finish.

BETWEEN EARTH AND SEA

Planet Earth, set near eight o’clock, shines in a new light with the blue livery. An original Greubel Forsey creation from ten years ago (2011), the rotating terrestrial globe allows for the simultaneous display of several different time zones: on the dial side, with a 24-hour ring around the Earth, for Day/Night indication and on the caseback side, displaying 24 major cities their
respective time zones while distinguishing between those which use summer time (on a light coloured backdrop), and those which donot (on a dark backdrop).

The sapphire crystal window around the equator completes the timepiece, offering a complete view of the Earth in motion, with its continents immersed in the deep blue ocean waters, complementing the exquisite blue finish of the power reserve, hour circle and strap.
