Princess Yachts America adds CLEARLINE to All Inventory Vessels

Princess Yachts America has added the new system to all inventory vessels, while Princess Yachts will offer CLEARLINE on all new builds.

ElectroSea, experts in Marine Growth Prevention Systems, just introduced the CLEARLINE System CL-2000 for large yachts, super yachts and vessels over 90ft (27m), and Princess Yachts is among one of the many luxury yacht manufacturers who have integrated this cutting-edge system on all new yachts that fit the bill.

Barnacles don’t just live on a boat’s hull, they make their way into the raw-water system where they clog pipes and wreak havoc on air conditioners, refrigeration and other machinery that depends on this water for cooling. With the CLEARLINE System, marine growth in the boat’s seawater lines is a thing of the past. That means no more descaling with hazardous, acid-base products and no more downtime due to high-pressure alarms from the boat’s onboard air conditioner.

The CLEARLINE System from ElectroSea uses patent-pending technology to continuously prevent barnacles, biofilm, and marine scale from clogging the vessel’s seawater conduits. This keeps raw-water lines for A/C, chillers, refrigeration and hydraulics running at peak performance with maximum flow rates. Once the CLEARLINE System is installed, the boat will never need descaling again, a costly process that is hazardous for the crews doing the work, as well as the marine environment.

The CLEARLINE System includes two key components, the Control Unit and the ClearCell, which is plumbed into the raw-water lines. When seawater enters the ClearCell, an electrochemical process generates a consistent, low level of chlorine, similar to what you’d find in tap water, but enough to keep barnacles at bay. The Control Unit monitors the vessel’s raw water demand and dynamically delivers the precise amount of chlorine to prevent barnacle growth. Chlorinated water flows through the air conditioner, refrigeration and other systems, and a secondary flow of water runs back through the strainers.

Captains using the CLEARLINE System spend less time in the engine room now that they no longer have to deal with descaling. The founders of ElectroSea are lifelong boaters who saw a problem on their own vessel and used their product development expertise to solve it. “We applied our background in electrochemical systems, sterilants and filtration technologies to address a recurring issue in the boating community,” says Louis C. Cosentino, Ph.D. “We know first-hand how frustrating and expensive it is to have a trip ruined because of marine growth in the A/C raw-water lines.” The company’s founders have over 100 U.S. patents in advanced technologies.

The first unit is currently under production and due for completion in August. Featuring a “striking iridescent green hull” dubbed “gator green” in reference to Wally’s first sailing yacht the Wallygator, the first hull will be unveiled at the Cannes Yachting Festival this September.

Key features of the new model include a new ‘centre cockpit’ design that combines “the protection of the cockpit with the practicality and access of a walkaround”.

Wraparound glass will cocoon those onboard from three sides while the T-Top will shelter from above.

Elsewhere, the 43wallytender, which has been specifically designed for driver experience, easy handling and performance, will feature a flush, open deck space behind the cockpit.

Storage in the aft sunbed will be large enough to swallow Seabobs, wakeboards, scuba diving tanks and other small water toys.

Powered by a pair of Volvo Penta diesel 380hp engines, 43wallytender will have a top speed of 36 knots. Owners also have the option to upgrade to twin 440hp engines for predicted top speeds of more than 40 knots.

Speaking about the new model, chief designer and founder of Wally, Luca Bassani, said: “Our team has worked tirelessly to create a new tender that perfectly meets the multifunctional needs of today’s owners while also staying true to our Wally design philosophy. You will not find a single item onboard that does not serve a purpose in its purest, simplest and most beautiful form.”

Wally managing director Stefano de Vivo added: “Upholding Wally’s customary cool aesthetics and extraordinary performance, this latest addition to the Wally family is sure to be a benchmark of the future.”

The Princess Yachts’ X95 flybridge

Antony Sheriff has transformed the fortunes of Bernard Arnault’s yachtmaker Princess, creating boats that are stylish, in demand and environmentally innovative, for a new generation of consumer.

“It’s the sports car of the range. The hull reduces drag by 30 per cent, and it has sports-car-like performance and a Pininfarina design.” Princess Yachts CEO Antony Sheriff is enthusing over a projection of the R35, his company’s cool-looking 35-foot yacht, the latest in a series of innovations he has overseen in what is fast becoming known as the most dynamic yachtmaker in the world.

“Sometimes,” he says, “if you are doing something new and are innovating, customers don’t know what they want until you give it to them.” Sheriff has been responsible for a number of innovations at the company, which is owned by LVMH-owner Bernard Arnault through his private equity company L Catterton, both on the product side and on partnerships.

In 2016 he launched a collaboration with the Marine Conservation Society, aimed at helping clean up ocean plastics, conserve coral and aid the conservation of marine creatures such as turtles. The Italian-American, who in his previous job launched McLaren’s hybrid P1 hypercar as CEO of the company’s road-car division, is disarmingly straight talking. “We are an industry which makes beautiful products, but we haven’t always been that mindful of the effects they have. We wanted to do something quietly to reduce the impact of yachts on the sea.”

He says the impetus has not – yet – come from the market, but from his own initiative. “We are trying to do the right thing and would rather be on the front foot than the back foot. People enjoy yachting because of the beautiful environment, and we need to try and maintain the water in the state we found it in.”

Sheriff says that, as with cars, the need to innovate for environmental reasons has actually ended up bringing better products to market. He points to the example of the X95, which has up to 40 per cent more space than its predecessor while using 30 per cent less fuel and matching it in performance; and the Y95, another super-slick collaboration with Italian design house Pininfarina, which seems to have taken up its unparalleled design of luxury modes of transport where it left off with Ferrari after the end of a collaboration there spanning decades.

Sheriff is a little scathing about some of the bloated products on offer from other yachtmakers, and adds: “We are putting the elegance and refinement back in yacht design, creating yachts that look like they belong on the ocean.”

Ultimately, though, he says the biggest change during his tenure since 2016 has been the change in the nature of the consumer. “Increasingly people are buying yachts not as status symbols but as places to spend a wonderful time with family and friends. You go on a family vacation in a yacht and it’s the best vacation possible: the kids stay together with you for fantastic family time, they can’t run away to the nightclub, and you get to spend time with each other in private in a beautiful place.” And, if some of the latest Pininfarina designs continue in the same vein, on a beautiful place, too.
