Top Fashion Photographers of All Times

Mario Testino

Mario Testino is one of the world’s most influential photographers. His cultural and commercial zeitgeist has made him a much sought-after creative partner in the fashion and beauty industry today. His work has been featured across the globe in magazines from Vogue to Vanity Fair and he has contributed to the success of many leading fashion and beauty houses through advertising campaigns, from Burberry and Gucci to Dolce & Gabbana and Versace.

Helmut Newton

Helmut Newton received a number of awards. In 1989 he was named ‘Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres’ by the French Minister of Culture, and in 1992 he was awarded the ‘Grosses Bundesverdienstkreuz’ by the Federal Republic of Germany and the ‘Chevalier des Arts, Lettres et Science’ by Monaco. Life Magazine gave him the ‘Life Legend Award for Lifetime Achievement in Magazine Photography’ in 1999. The newtons had spent winters in Los Angeles for the last 25 years. They lived the rest of the year in Monte Carlo. Newton donated 1000 works to his native city in October 2003 – a berlin museum to showcase his work.

One of the most iconic fashion photographers of all time, Steven Meisel easily remains the one photographer with whom all the models aspire to work. Has photographed every cover of Vogue Italia since 1988.

Richard Avedon

Richard Avedon (May 15, 1923 – October 1, 2004) was an American fashion and portrait photographer. An obituary published in The New York Times said that “his fashion and portrait photographs helped define America’s image of style, beauty and culture for the last half-century.”

Annie Leibovitz

Annie Leibovitz is a famous American portrait photographer. She was born on October 2, 1949, in Waterbury, Connecticut. While studying painting at the San Francisco Art Institute, she took night classes in photography, and in 1970, she began doing work for Rolling Stone magazine. She became Rolling Stone’s chief photographer in 1973. By the time she left the magazine, 10 years later, she had shot 142 covers. In 1983, she joined the staff at Vanity Fair, and in 1998, she also began working for Vogue. In addition to her magazine editorial work, Leibovitz has created influential advertising campaigns for American Express and the Gap.

Irving Penn

Irving Penn was an American photographer known for his fashion photography, portraits, and still lifes. Penn’s career included work at Vogue magazine, and independent advertising work for clients including Issey Miyake, and Clinique. His work has been exhibited internationally, and continues to inform the art of photography.

Steven Klein

After studying painting at the Rhode Island School of Design, he moved into the field of photography. Klein shot high-profile advertising campaigns for various clients including Calvin Klein, D&G, Alexander McQueen and Nike and is a regular contributor to magazines including American and Paris Vogue, i-D, Numéro, W and Arena.His work has featured in numerous exhibitions, most recently at the Gagosian Gallery, California and the Brancolini Grimaldi Gallery in Florence. Ellen von Unwerth (born 1954 in Frankfurt, Germany) is a photographer and director, specializing in erotic femininity. She worked as a fashion model for ten years herself before moving behind the camera, and now makes fashion, editorial, and advertising photographs. Ellen von Unwerth found fame when she first photographed Claudia Schiffer. Her work has been published in top magazines like Vogue, Vanity Fair, Interview, The Face, Arena, Twill, L’Uomo Vogue and I-D, and she has published several books of photography. She won first prize at the International Festival of Fashion Photography in 1991.
